Still around

A juvenile peregrine falcon's head with a cathedral tower behind it
The peregrines are still using the platform on Derby Cathedral, much to the delight of at least a few dedicated web cam watchers who regularly post updates in the comments!
It's well-worth checking these out at the bottom of the most recent post as it will give you an idea of what's been happening recently.

To stop spammers, we don't permit comments to be added to any blog post that is more than three months old. So, this post is simply to refresh that timer during the 'quiet season'. Please remember to add topical comments only to the most recently published post.

It's quite normal to see occasional nest scraping activity even in the depths of winter, as one or other of the adult birds reinforces their link to the nesting platform. Feel free to add any observations that you've made whilst watching our webcams to the comments below.

Notice that there appear to be a couple of birds legs, remains of a meal no doubt, with rings attached. I can see two with different colours (yellow and blue). Can anybody provide a background information on what birds these are from and will the rings be collected at some point and returned to the ringers?

Thanks for the new page and that great pic!

Lots of noise, 2 then 1, who left a short while later

Anonymous said...

Very pleased they keep returning home

Anonymous said...

Just now someone was home for about ten minutes and then flew off (to hunt for breakfast, I presume).

Anonymous said...

They're both at home ATM 😊

Anonymous said...

Been watching them since half past eight! Only had an opportunity to comment now.

Anonymous said...

Oh, the one from cam 1 just took off. (Please come back)

Anonymous said...

With these two landing on the tower often I wonder when they'll get time and of course the money to fix the hole you can see on Cam 1, it worries me.
Please help them and donate everyone.

Anonymous said...

Busy preening !

Anonymous said...

The partner showed up again ~

Anonymous said...

Aaand gone again.

Anonymous said...

One still at home

Anonymous said...

Wendy Bartter said...

She's still there having a good preen

Anonymous said...

Having a little nap

Anonymous said...

Ah! Flew off when I wasn’t looking (also what an inconvenient place for a raindrop… ).

Anonymous said...

My WIFI dropped out again so I missed it leaving too. Agree about the raindrop.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous said...

Yes ....where are they hiding ?

Anonymous said...

Anonymous said...

They're both home!!

Anonymous said...

One just went (Cam 1)

Anonymous said...

Both gone now, I wasn't looking at the time but the last one must have gone a while ago!

Anonymous said...

Same here, had a very chaotic day so I missed them leaving. 🥲

Wendy Bartter said...

Pleased to have recorded some footage of our lovely female, shame I missed the later visit of both ... https://youtu.be/PhmefJ2fPcA

Anonymous said...

What is that shape on camera 1?

Anonymous said...

Probably raindrops.

Anonymous said...

Looking at it today its hard to believe it was so bad yesterday, so much rain! The hole in the floor of Cam 1 is getting bigger now, think the floor is getting lower too looking at the front edge :(
At least it looks like all the rain cleaned the dirty smudge off of Cam 1, lets hope that blob of water goes next :)
Please don't forget to make a donation to them - https://derbyperegrines.blogspot.com/p/donate.html

Anonymous said...

Disaster, just looked, look at the bottom on Cam 1, its broken and getting worse as I look, its so sad :(

Anonymous said...

Same here. I’m stupefied at the rate it’s falling apart. WT will surely act on it sooner rather than later, right?

Anonymous said...

I hope they will too. Don't forget they need donations everyone, especially now - https://derbyperegrines.blogspot.com/p/donate.html

Anonymous said...

Have just donated. Can't afford much but will give more when I can. It's so sad seeing it the way it is 😢

Anonymous said...

So have I, lets hope others have too and they can fix it soon

Kate said...

Dreadful but am sure Nick and Team will be aware ..Also just donated

Project Member (DWT) said...

Hi All: the project team is aware or the problem and we will update the blog as soon as we can.
The birds themselves won't come to any harm of course which is the main thing. Getting a replacement platform will take some time both to make and install.
Meanwhile many thanks to those of you who have donated.

Wendy Bartter said...

Any idea of the cost involved in making a new box the same?

Anonymous said...

One just left after having been perched cam 2 side for a while.

Anonymous said...

And one back perched enjoying the sunshine camera 2

Anonymous said...

I managed to see them in the last ten minutes before leaving to hunt, I presume.

Anonymous said...

We have an adult home!

Wendy Bartter said...

Male comes in at 13.06 & cautiously enters the broken tray, later the female flies in but leaves immediately ...
https://youtu.be/o5g4_36KQlI

Anonymous said...

He just did some scraping on the right side and I held my breath, haha.

Wendy Bartter said...

Certainly a bit nerve-racking waiting to see if the tray holds their weight & movement!!

Anonymous said...

Looks like he’s gone hunting for a meal.

Wendy Bartter said...

Went off after seeing another Peregrine flying by, shows top left of cam #1 in slo-mo ... trying the two screens at once so as not to miss stuff, looks to be enough detail full screen, what do you think?
https://youtu.be/inPi4v4bPmo

Anonymous said...

Looked like the partner flew after him?

Project Member (DWT) said...

Plans are now in place to abseil down and remove the heavy gravel etc so the base of the platform does not sag any further. If necessary a support will be added to hold the base in place.
Discussions about a new platform have begun.
We don't think the birds will be affected or are likely to desert the nest.
We'll update everyone when we have further details and clarification.
Thanks for yiour patience.

Anonymous said...

What did I miss, all the top of the platform is bare, did it all fall off or was it all removed?

Anonymous said...

I missed it aswell

Project Member (DWT) said...

There's a new blog post about the work on the platform carried out today (21st) so please don't add further comments here but instead make them to the new post if you will. Thanks.
