First egg hatches this morning (22nd April) and an Update

Update 24th April: with two eggs hatched now we can expect a third quite soon. Whether the white egg, the first to be laid, will hatch we must begin to doubt.....
Here's the latest feed captured by the incredible efforts of Wendy Bartter (thanks Wendy):

Our first egg hatched this morning (Thursday 22nd) and screengrabs were captured by 'Necessity is Plato' - so thanks to you whoever and wherever you are!
Hopefully we will have a video of a changeover before too long which will also show the tiny white chick. This page will be updated as and when......
Here is that video (thanks Wendy) showing a somewhat erratic feed with the chick apparently on its back at one point:

By working back through comments left on our blog and at our @derbyperegrines Twitter account yesterday and today, it seems that the first signs that hatching was imminent were heard last night (21st April) Anonymous said: "I definitely heard faint cheeping just now!"

At 10:25 this morning, on Twitter, Necessity is Plato posted the image above, saying "One Chick is definitely hatched!!!"

At 10:35 this morning, Anonymous repeated: "ONE CHICK HAS DEFINITELY HATCHED!"

Then at 10:45am, Anonymous said:: "The female bird is eating one of the brown eggshells. :)"

AnonyBy 12:27, Wendy Bartler had captured this video of the tiercel's first visit after hatching.

At 14:50, one of the Year 1 children in Gillmor Class at Brigg Infants School had posted this lovely comment: "we hav seen a wite flufy chick. we wer exssited."

At 14:52, Wendy captured this video of the male bringing in food, but she shows little interest in it.

By 17:09 we saw the first successful feeding of the new chick (see above)

Brought this over from previous page ...
Dad comes in to see FIRST chick, chats to Mum but she won't changeover

Have to wait for next changeover for a clear view of the chick!

Just watch a feed. Dad was sat on the eggs and mum was there with the food. As she started feeding the chick came out further from under dad. This appears to be a less skilled pair than the last ones ( hardly surprising) . When mum flew off with the remainder of the prey there was a tense moment with the chick left exposed on it's back in the cold. However when mum returned and they changed over after some effort she managed to gather the chick and the eggs under her. Chris m

I watched that too Chris! It looked like the male didn't really know quite what to do with it. It seems to be a strong chick, moving around a lot already.

Just a polite reminder to everyone who posts screenshots from our webcams online: could you please ensure you change the default licencing of your uploads from being your 'copyright' to Creative Commons Commercial Reuse.

We like to be able to offer these images to anyone to use or modify as they wish - even commercially, and the terms of all Creative Commons licence means that copies or derivative images should also be released with a CC-BY-SA licence. It's no big deal, but it's nice that we are all willing to share the images, and many schoolkids often look for images they can put in projects, so this is a nice way to make their life a little less worrysome.
Thanks

Great news!

Nick, how do you change the licencing?

Chick fed. It didn't appear completely full but obviously got some. Mum does appear to be getting a little more skilled at the task. Chris m

Mum very reluctant to changeover with Dad when he came in at 12.20, took her four minutes to make up her mind ... https://youtu.be/3L95lb_Pqm0

Thanks for info about the feed Chris, I missed that one!

Saw a later feed around 14.30-ish & she seemed to be managing to feed chick with more success ... in the shade so a bit too dark for vid!

And then there were 2!

Great to see both chicks being fed this morning. It looks like the pale egg is still intact.

Wendy I saw the mother bird do that a couple of days ago, too. She flew off with the food, but flew back with the mostly-stripped carcass and fed the chick from it.

Wendy Bartter said...

She must have been terribly hungry Anon, having to feed herself first before being able to feed chick(s), after all they only need a few mouthfuls of tiny morsels when so new ... always amazes me how fast they grow though!

Wendy Bartter said...

Trying to count the chicks ... I think only the TWO

Another feed just ended, could only see one feeding on cam #1 as too far in corner, switched to other cam after she'd flown with prey & could see two ... plus lots of feathers from latest food! Lol

Feed just before 7 this morning. Still appeared to be just 2 chicks.

Poor mum she must be shattered. She is leaving a lot of bits lying around on the platform. That is a bit of a concern.

Can anyone help a technophobe that in previous years has had no problems viewing the webcams please. This year I can view both webcams with audio on webcam 1 but the time frame stays on the time that I login and therefore unable to view any movement within the platform.

Lovely to see that there are chicks this year and fingers crossed all will fledge safely as this new pair seem to be on a steep learning curve!

Wendy Bartter said...

Hi Heather, sorry to hear of your problems viewing the cams, I have not experiencec any problems since live streaming was restored ... all I can suggest is that you completely refresh your links to see if that works , if you haven't already tried that is, another is to clear the cache on your pc!
If no luck then email the two Nicks to see what they suggest!

Hi Wendy, have been enjoying the glorious sunshine today so will try your suggestions regarding the webcams tomorrow. Hopefully one of them will solve the problem. Many thanks and fingers crossed!

Hi Wendy,
Just been enjoying seeing the latest feed on my iPhone, the falcon seems to be getting the hang of it & lovely to see the chicks in real time. Now to tackle the iPad!

Wendy Bartter said...

Pleased to hear you saw a feed Heather, I missed that one ... presume still just the TWO chicks?
