Ringing goes well

Update 10th May: the two chicks continue to grow well and are even feeding themselves from scraps left on the platform. Here's a video from Wendy taken today:

The ringing of the two chicks today (8th May) went smoothly as usual and the two were quickly returned to their nest with bling on their legs! One chick was 200grams heavier than the other so we have a female and a (smaller) male.

All photos by Watch Point volunteer Joyce Sawford to whom thanks.
And massive thanks to Jess Eades (the abseiler) and Chloe Pritchard (the ringer) for their expert help today.

The ring details are:

the likely FEMALE:   Orange Colour Ring = XLN;  BTO metal ring = GY69751; weight 738g.

The likely MALE : Orange C
olour ring XNN,  BTO ring GY69752, weight 538g.

(Note: these details have been updated as the male ring letters were initially given incorrectly)

The female with her colour ring on view

Here's Wendy Bartter's condensed video of the whole ringing process, taken from the web cams:

Ps There will be four Watch Point events starting later this month when the chicks are visible from the ground. Details to follow later.

This project is managed by Derbyshire Wildlife Trust with support from The Cathedral, Cathedral Quarter and the city council's IT team to whom thanks.

Wonderful Thanks to all the Team, am sure parents are all watching and waiting.Love how the duo handy persons ( Jess and Nick M) did quick repair work and also cleaned the Nest. also Joyce for the lovely pics.

Here is footage of the abseilers arriving at the nest at 14.40, many thanks to Jess for her careful handling of the chicks and for helping Nick Moyes with the repairs, must have been difficult under those conditions ... they finished at 15.20 after chicks safely back and being quite vocal but soon settled down to sleep it off, 40 minutes of action speedily condensed into just 13 ...

Now watching for parents to bring some food!
Great to see pictures of the chicks being ringed, thanks to Chloe!

Thanks Wendy, we do our best to look after them as best we can, and get them back to their lives as quickly and safely as possible

Thank goodness ... Mum just arrived with prey ... was getting very concerned!

Jules said...

Feed underway now took along time for one of the chicks to respond but is now making up for it!

Chloe said...

Yes I was worried the little one wasn't interested in feeding but looks like everything's as it should be now ๐Ÿ™‚

Jules said...

Male has bought a small prey back too and looked confused why they weren't interested in another feed!
This morning just before 9 I saw they had caught a woodpecker for them!

We found evidence of two Great Spotted Woodpeckers being taken as prey today.

Good to know we have a female and a male, any special reason you haven't published their ring numbers?

Jules said...

Feed underway at present you can really tell how much more they are eating now compared to even a few days ago!

Wendy Bartter said...

Here is that feed that started at 11.16 when Mum brought in prey, looks like our little male got off to flying start but soon overtaken by bigger female ... they were both flapping their wings afterwards before moving into hidden corner to sleep it off ...

Sad news from Worcester another chick has died after being pushed out by the single remaining chick .They have managed to retrieve the body and are sending for forensic tests

I have updated the blog post containing the ring details as we initially posted the male ring as XXN, not XNN. The latter is the correct one.

Bit more substantial than the meal below

Thanks Nick

Jules said...

I see they are pecking at the prey themselves too! They had a large meal this morning just before 7 (another pigeon I think ) and we're both satisfied before the prey was finished

Wendy Bartter said...

Saw the chicks decamp to the other scrape a while ago so mainly out of sight, Mum brought prey about ten minutes ago and had to move into slate scrape to feed them, only had sight of one most of the time, wonder how long it will be before they trudge back?๐Ÿค”

Wendy Bartter said...

Good to know Jules, they were trying to feed off old scraps yesterday

The chicks are still out of sight as of 5.37am.

Nattalie said...

And they are still really naughty and out of sight

Nattalie said...

And they are back phew lol

Wendy Bartter said...

Feed at 13.29 after which littl'un goes into other scrape out of sight ...
https://youtu.be/vwo3jGebWls

At the next feed at 15.01 Mum has to feed chicks individually as the littl'un took his time to appear from the other scrape ...

Jules said...

There was a feed just before 18.30 but it was mainly off camera as they were both in the slate scrape

Wendy Bartter said...

Missed that one, they're certainly enjoying new found mobility๐Ÿ˜€

Jules said...

They are ok but they are moving around alot more and keep going onto the slate scrape and not being in sight

Jules said...

They certainly are! Adult had more prey at 19.30 ish but chicks were completely out of sight at this point and I only caught he tail end of it so no idea if they had a feed or whether they were still full

Nattalie said...

Chick's still well out of sight :(

Wendy Bartter said...

Some chick perambulations this afternoon ... can disappear quite easily these days!

Wendy Bartter said...

This feed was already in progress at 14.54 ...

This longer feed at 16.26 was at a different angle due to chicks being so mobile ...

And they back in view ๐Ÿ˜Š

Emma said...

Just checked in and I canโ€™t see either chicks or adults on the cameras?!

Jules said...

One of the chicks was visible earlier and one of the adults is there now. The chicks keep going round the corner in the slate scrape out of camera sight
