By 3pm today we had two chicks hatched, and comments from you wonderful webcam watchers suggest that by 6:30pm a third chick had hatched (possibly from the whitish-looking egg.

What a lovely Easter surprise, thanks to everyone for all the great shots. Just started to watch again after nasty bout of Covid but these little ones have really cheered me up! Glad they’ve had some really good weather and the fairly new parents really seem to know what they’re doing this year.

Been watching on and off most of today. Thursday 21st April. Not seen any feeding. Only the one bird. Yesterday feeding was 2 hourly.
Hi John, I saw all three of the chicks being fed at around 1.40pm this afternoon. It looked like they all had a fairly good amount of food. Both adult birds were around then too.
Hello all. this the first time I have checked in on the Peregrines this year. I remember a couple of years ago that the it had been confirmed that the female was the original female who nested here when the platform was first put in place. However, the male was a new young male. Presumably, the original male had died and the old female had taken a young toy boy ;-) . Does anyone know if this is still that original female and if this is that young male that first appeared a couple of years ago?
Hello Dave, the current female bird arrived back in 2020. The original female disappeared around the same time. The corpse of an adult female was later found on the nave roof, but there was no way of knowing if this was the original female or not. You can read about it in the following blog post.

The male bird appeared in 2017, and has a metal ring on his left leg. I think this will be the second year this pair have successfully produced young (having failed the first year).

Hi Heather, both web cams seem to be working fine. I sometimes get a similar message when the camera has timed out on my laptop and then I try and click play again, but if I refresh the page it comes straight back up ok. If it happens again I would just try refreshing the page to see if it clears it.

Hi everyone, so this morning I noticed the egg just near the ledge and thought maybe the 4th chick had hatched but then a little later I caught the dad bringing the food back and the mum then feeding the chicks but there were only 3. It was my first time seeing anything like that and was beautiful to see but I noticed that the egg had disappeared and I’m just wondering did the 4th egg not hatch or make it?

I’m really hoping it hasn’t been knocked off the side but it’s nowhere to be seen now from what I can see. I thought the egg looked slightly cracked/hatched this morning when I first saw it but I can’t be sure and it was early lol. But when watching the mum move and feed her chicks I couldn’t see the egg around or underneath them. After seeing the egg this morning I was hoping to see the fourth chick snuggled under mummy today but when I only saw 3 at feeding time I was confused. I did manage to screen record the feed this morning and super excited to show my partner later when he’s home from work. I’m unsure of how to upload it or whether I’m allowed so I’ve just saved it lol. But very sad now at the thought of it being knocked over the edge if that’s what’s happened :(

I feel so sad about the unhatched egg that got pushed out, I really hope it was unviable and there wasn't a little live chick inside.
I think if there was a live chick inside it would of hatched by then, mum n dad must of known sumet wernt right as she pushed it to the back alot before the other 3 hatched. I seen dad tellin mum off a bit when he was tryin to feed the chicks lol for some reason she didnt want to go but eventually flew off for 10 min

Thanks for your advice re Webcams and pleased to say it’s all systems go and looking forward to glimpses of the three chicks being fed. We all seem to worry about one of the chicks not getting its fair share but in the end they all seem to be ok.
Think can just see the pigeon on the ledge below the scrape and seem to remember this happened a few years ago. Perfectly safe when you think about it!

25th April 18.13 Male came in with prey and fed three healthy chick's tercel went off me left nest 18.27 female returned one minute later
Just seen all three chicks having a good feed from what looked like a fairly large carcass. Once again both parents in attendance until one went off, presumably mum for short break then returned to take over brooding duties. Carcass then removed to be stashed away until ready for another delicious meal!
8.26am All 3 chicks having a good breakfast with two carcasses brought to the scrape by both parents.
5.36am today dad come back to feed babys, mum didnt go anywhere again, im startin to wonder if shes gettin lazy m worked out she cant just stay there n pinch food off dad stoppin babys gettin much, although they seem to be gettin their fair share, just not seen her fly off much,

Hi Heather, sorry can't help with number of feeds per day as not had much luck catching them these past few days but one give-away is the amount of tag ends of food on the scrape, they always leave the old bones & little scraps of bloody meat & these are building up now! Saw a feed at 10.33 thiis morning!

One thing i wonder is if mum sleeps at nite with babies where does dad sleep? Plus do they only use the nest box at breedin time, or all year?

Off topic, daughter in USA has robin nesting on top of column in their new home. Much larger than our robins more size of thrush, brooding eggs takes approx 13 days, with sometimes 3 broods each year. Fortunately the cat is used to being indoors!

18.50 supper is served after mum called out from edge of rather messy scrape. Seem to remember it got into rather a bad state last time whereas the old Mrs P kept it as clean as possible. Chicks enjoyed sunbathing session this morning. Getting so big they hardly fit under the falcon anymore.
Have just looked at other end of scrape and can see what looks like brown egg, is this the discarded one or just my imagination?

I've just spotted a couple of unanswered questions from Scoobi19 amongst these posts. Firstly, our male peregrine (called a tiercel) often spends his time away from the nest platform, on 'guard duty' on nearby tall buildings, such as the Jury's Inn hotel opposite. The only time we see them together on the nest ledge is during courtship displays and during incubation changeover and feeding time, when the male brings in food for her and the chicks (eyases)
Outside the breeding season, the tiercel and the falcon (the name for the female peregrine) don't spend much time on the nest platform at all. They certainly don't roost there. Again, they seem to like the nearby huge illuminated letters of the Jury's Inn, with its clear view of the tower and nest platform. We have often mused whether they like the warmth these illuminated letters might generate. We know they also roost on the highest ledges of the Cathedral Tower, just below the parapet where they may range out to hunt for food at night (using the light generated in Derby to assist them). We have video clips from previous years showing that they do bring freshly-caught night-flying prey prey such as snipe back to the tower.

Iv been away for the weekend and just had a little look and to my surprise no mum or dad just babies napping, so they leave them more n more as they get older? How do babies know not to go near edge?
It's an innate response not to go near the edge of anything - probably sensed by an absence of anything firm under their talons when on a normal cliff ledge. I would imagine that Natural Selection would have very effectively weeded out any individuals that did not respond in that way. They've certainly had millions of years to perfect it.
Looking at the there growing chicks today, I see them all huddled together for warmth, with a parent watching over them on the ledge. They take in so much energy via their food and no doubt burn a lot of it when it's cold. Should it be raining, then the parent will be more attentive to keep them as dry as possible so that they don't chill down. But with chicks this size, and getting bigger each day, that's going to be an increasing challenge! Peregrines are found nesting in the high mountain, so the milder temperatures here in Derby aren't going to be that much of an issue for them (even if I'm personally trying to avoid the temptation to turn my home heating on today!).

Babies growing so fast. Will they be ringed? How and when would this be done?

We try to ring the chicks between 18-21 days after hatching, and are currently arranging to schedule this. We will let you know when this occurs, though the cameras will probably be off for the duration. A trained and licenced ringer carries out the ringing, and one of the team (me - gulp!) is permitted to abseil down under their licence to carefully bag up and lower the chicks to the ringer down below. It's a scarily responsible task I've undertaken for the last few years, albeit with great trepidation lest I do something wrong whilst dangling there.
Sadly, Dave Budworth, a hugely experienced bird ringer and entomologist who has ringed our peregrine chicks for a few years now, died suddenly and unexpectedly earlier in February - an absolutely huge blow to the natural history community in and around Derbyshire, and a great loss of a long-standing friend and collaborator for me. Dave was training a new ringer, Chloe, to work with birds of prey, and she helped with the ringing in 2021 under his supervision. Now that she has attained her full ringing licence, Chloe has kindly offered to stand in and do the business for us in 2022. It will be a bitter-sweet event for us all, I'm afraid.

Hi Anon, I am sure the male bird will be nearby, albeit out of sight of the cameras. He often perches higher up on the tower or on the nearby hotel lettering. The female and the chicks seem settled at the minute.
A restless night for me, checked in and saw mum seemed to be swallowing pieces of grit or tiny pebbles - possibly to aid digestion?
Nick so very sorry to hear that Dave Budworth had passed away in February, such an experienced bird ringer and enormous loss to everyone concerned. Condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. May I wish Chloe all the very best in carrying on the magnificent job Dave did and am sure she will do well remembering everything he taught her, despite it being an emotional time for all concerned.

Anon - now that the youngsters are bigger you will see longer periods with no adult attending them, no cause for concern. You can see the chicks calling out for mummy - very much like human babies do!
The passing of Dave Budworth is indeed sad, and a loss to all concerned. I hope that his family can find some solace in knowing the high level of respect that he had.
I am sure that Chloe will be boosted to know that followers from all over the world will be wishing her well as she takes over the full responsibility for the ringing.

Hi Scoobi19. It's always a trepidatious moment going over the edge and lowering oneself down to the peregrine platform. Once we've thrown the rope over, we've already disturbed the adult (usually the female). She flies around the tower for a bit, calling loudly. But then settles down, making the occasional pass to scream at us before settling back down. The chicks back themselves into the wall, striking out with their talons at me. I've learned to drop a piece of cloth for them to grab hold of before trying to carefully hold and lift them into the bag for lowering. One then has to be very careful not to swing them as you lower them to the nave roof where the ringing team hook the dangling bag and pull in to start getting to work.
Once hoisted back up, they're carefully released onto the platform with their nice, new jewellery. Then it's a case of getting down asap and leaving the adults to return to the ledge, none the worse for wear.

Watching 18.45 feed. Very distressing to watch. One chick struggling to swallow a huge piece of food. Mum flown off. Chick left with food hanging out of its mouth. Really hope it'll be OK.
19.45 and Mum is back. Chick still struggling with what looks like a leg with feet. Mum getting upset trying to remove it. I don't think I can watch any longer, too upsetting.

Just got home and seen the latest news. All bedded down for the night with mum in attendance. Think the chick mentioned is on the left and pigeon leg seems to be at side of beak but chick seems to be breathing shallowly. Was wondering if Team can intervene as ringing due fairly soon, but guess it’s such short notice if it does indeed survive the night. Might have been better to have happened in daylight when prey brought in and the chick might have opened its beak and possibly mum able to dislodge it. Very distressing viewing.
Ignore my last sentence, after viewing videos can see prey was brought in during daylight so wouldn’t have made any difference. Hopefully chick will be able to dislodge it in the morning.

Sorry to hear the vid upset you Scoobi but how was I to know? I would suggest you don't watch when the chicks are older & start teetering on the ledge, that can be very stressful!

Hardly dared to login this morning but glad all resolved. I checked around midnight and all were sleeping well which bears out Jean’s comment that chick had probably dislodged it by 10pm. Didn’t realise it was ringing day today, nice weather for it and good luck to all involved. I’m sure it’ll be bittersweet remembering Dave Budworth but am sure Chloe, Nick and team will do a sterling job.
So pleased chick seems ok this morning. Nature can be cruel and we have to accept that things beyond our control can happen. Totally agree with Wendy's comment about chicks on the edge of the ledge!
So pleased all OK with babies, was difficult viewing last night but nature is amazing. I lost a Robin's nest to a magpie this week, that's how it goes. Can't wait for ringing news. Good luck all.
Ropes have appeared, so ringing is about to happen. I look forward to a report on the health of all three youngsters.
All three chicks are back. I missed the critical action, but Nick is sure to give us a report.

Not yet Jay, we are waiting eagerly for news of the ringing. We do see that all three chicks have been returned and the falcon was with them.
Ringing now completed - just awaiting some photos of the ringing to come through. Then a new blog post will be published, and all comments should then be made on that new post, rather than on this one.

Interesting to see that the coloured rings this year appear to be letters rather than numbers, like they have been in the past.
Another feed going on just now, 15.15, & saw a leg & foot fed to one of the bigger chicks, went down quite easily though but little one not joining in, wonder if mouth/throat sore?

Sorry my comment sounded harsh i was strugglin this morn and seen that video, im very emotional wen comes to animals. Yes i was same last year wen they were near edge and couldnt watch :( glad little one ok now

Congratulations Team for yet another successful ringing. Great video Wendy, had to laugh at one chick who didn’t seem to want its new found friend to leave! After 185 blogs guess we’re due an updated page, will be interesting to see new photos and discovering which chicks were male or female.
