Forthcoming events

There's a lot to look forward to in Derby this season.

Pretty soon we hope to be seeing the first signs of hatching of our (very late) eggs. We had a change of male this year, causing the eggs to be laid much later than normal as you can see from copy of our master timetable, normally found on our 'FAQ' page.
Extrapolating from past dates, we can expect hatching next week, around Wed 10th or Thursday 11th May.

We'll then be announcing our WatchPoint dates to the media though we can tell you that they will start on Saturday June 3rd and run every Wednesday and Saturday mornings until early July at least. This year we're expecting big crowds coming down to see the Weeping Window poppy display at the nearby Silk Mill Museum on Cathedral Green. Maybe we'll see some of you there?

Today we saw our first two swifs at school. They were flying about looking for food. They were flying quickly. The peregrins and swifs are very good flyers but peregrins are the quickest. They both have curved pointed wings.

That's great Emerald Class - well spotted!
As you say, swifts are indeed 'swift' fliers and can do 70 miles per hour in level flight (ie not diving down). Peregrines can go amazingly fast flying vertically down towards the earth but not nearly so fast in level flight...maybe about the same as a swift or slightly less fast!

Thanks for the information spreadsheet. According to that we should expect the first hatch maybe overnight or tomorrow!

I'm almost certain I just saw a pip in one of the eggs as the falcon was shifting around!

Think we might have a hatching!?

Helen said...

Sorry, false alarm! I thought I saw a flash of white but I think she was just preening!!

Morning all
I just love the way we are all on tenterhooks, waiting...

This morning has seen a lot of turning on the Eggs and shuffling , so surely must be today.

I do hope the children will be able to witness Hatch

We keep coming back trying to see whats happening! One thing ive learnt this year (first year watching) so far is how quick the chicks grow, the ones at Nottingham are huge already in a short amount of time! I know you see people say how quick it is but till you watch them you just don't get the real picture lol!

Jill F said...

I am watching with such excitement, she seems to be calling, when i hatched chickens, this was a sign of hatching as she is
encouraging the chicks to keep pipping through.

kate said...

@lisa enjoy and yes the chicks do grow very quickly.

@Jill F .. They certainly do chirrup to the chicks and she is certainly rocking and rolling those Eggs, surely must be tonight CHOL:):)
If you open Two Tabs
one as it is at log on. then open other Tab and select
web cam Page 2 No sound,
you will see another aspect and may catch any hatching if she turns.( hopping from one tab to the other)
You can hear the sound by leaving this first tab open

Have to go myself now, enjoy watching and posting.

The twitching i keep seeing her doing so much this morning is what i saw the Nottingham one doing the day before the first hatch! Cant see alot being done in my house over the next few days lol
