And then there were two!

We've just seen signs of a second egg, which was laid at 19:30 local time. Once again our wide-angle nest camera captured the moment in sound as it fell to the gravel floor of the nest scrape. So the gap between eggs one and two was about 53 hours, ie just over two days!

Egg no. 2 - laid around 19:30pm on 31st Match 2015

Seen at night-time under infra-red illumination, a peregrine egg looks white

Aww I missed it!

It's a very wild, wet and stormy evening in Derby but fortunately the prevailing (west) wind misses the east side of the tower which is relatively sheltered - so the eggs should be fine!
The incident with the flag pole ropes coming loose on the top of the tower this lunchtime was sorted out quickly once we knew there was a problem - so a big thanks to those commentators who alerted us on the blog and on facebook.
Ian Layton and I happened to be at the cathedral at the time and were able to go up and sort things out there and then!
Luckily no harm done......

Thanks Nick and Ian, it must have been awful to have to go up onto the roof in this weather. Well done! it's not anyone who could have done that. We are lucky to have such a team.
I am now waiting to get a glimpse of the eggs tonight.

Oh and thank you for the picture and video.

Just posted a photo of the two eggs in clear view.

Wow!!!!!! I've just seen egg number three being laid
at approximately 9.22 on 1 April. Wonderful experience, something I've never witnessed before.

Thank you to all who made it possible for me to witness.

Nice try Anne! Almost looked at the web cams but then I did notice the date.....

ps. Is 1st April 'celebrated' abroad as it is here do you know? If not, our overseas viewers may wonder what on earth is happening!

Hi Nick and Kate
This is NOT an April Fool's joke. I DID actually see the egg laid. Please look at the web cam, as it's now past noon, the April Fool's joke is not longer 'valid'!

I hope she flies off soon, then perhaps you'll see three eggs as I did.

Hi Anne: eggs clearly visible just now and there were only two that I could see...and I looked from different cameras...so I don't know what you saw earlier. Possibly something from the device which held the ropes on the flagpole at the top of the tower. There was a broken brown-coloured plastic 'holder' so just possibly part of that was in the nest and looked like an egg but has now been removed by one of the birds.
Just a thought.

Hi Anne
If you look at Flikr you will see to capturesone at 10.59 by Helen and another later by myself both showing just Two Eggs.

Cheers Kate

Birds just changed over sitting duty and saw the two eggs clearly - for a moment I thought I saw a chip in one, but think it's more than likely the mottled colouring that gave it a 3D effect. The falcon would have moved a broken egg to the side if there was a crack in it anyway, so feel sure the two eggs are all in tact.

Lorraine said...

Here is a snipping tool image of said eggs during the change over, which may not show much detail - but like I said, I feel sure they are both in tact, otherwise the falcon wouldn't have settled over them.
Isn't it strange how we worry and fret over them - we should have learnt by now that the Derby birds have everything under control, come rain or shine!

I'm still convinced I saw an egg, or something, being produced. I would appreciated it Nick if you could spare a moment of your precious time to look at the web cam at around 9.22 this morning. Please tell me what I saw the peregrine 'laying'

Many thanks in advance.

Brilliant news and thanks to all who make it possible for me to sit at home and see these great pictures and updates. Go Derby Perigrines - stay safe!

Yes, more great pics and updates! Good luck with the roof repairs and huge thanks to all concerned at Derby Cathedral for their ongoing support for the nest platform and peregrines, and to the project for their teamwork with the church and other authorities. My ancestors knew the church before it was a cathedral as they were tailors round the corner from it. I found the cathedral online and hence the peregrines :)

Very good to see the peregrine still sitting on the eggs whilst the roof repairs have been taking place, albeit keeping a close eye on the proceedings below.

19:59 tiercel on the eggs and I suspect it's the falcon on the top, her wings just visible as she is moving about probably eating. The tiercel keeps looking up at her.

I feel the third egg will come tonight sometime. If she hasn't already laid it.

Apparently, Derby Cathedral is being bathed in blue light tonight to mark National Autism Day. I don't think the rear (east side is affected), but possibly some unusual colours - or noises - might be noticed tonight.

Jodie said...

I think I just saw 3 eggs when she got up at 23:50......Any confirmation? :)

Phoebe said...

Hi Jodie, I wasn't watching then, but she just moved a little just now not enough to see all but I could see two eggs in front of her. I am sure if she'd laid someone else would have seen it. I expect to see another egg by morning, fingers crossed.

Peregrine Project Member (Nick M.) said...

Hi Jodie/Phoebe
I've been capturing screenshots every 10 seconds from both cameras and can confirm that at 23:50 there were only two eggs showing (plus a white feather).
Going on 56-57hrs between eggs, I'd expect a third egg, if it comes, around between c4-6am today, assuming my maths is right.

Phoebe said...

Thanks Nick M, I noticed the feather so that may have been what Jodie saw. It can get exciting when you something out of the norm. Hope so Nick then we might get a fourth on Sunday...

Abby-Lynn said...

She just got off the eggs. Only 2 at this time. Thanks to everyone for all the info and pictures.

Abby-Lynn said...

Only 2 eggs & she is sitting on the edge of the scrape.

Abby-Lynn said...

I think she laid the 3rd egg at 4:14 & it was 4:19 that I think I saw it on stream 2.

abby-Lynn said...

Yes I see the 3rd on on stream 2 at 4:21.

Peregrine Project Member (Nick M.) said...

Yes - 3rd egg laid at 04:21 (and not a second before!) See pictures on new blog post.
Where in the world were you watching from, Abby-Lynn? You were up very early if here in the UK.

Hi Nick M. I am on the west coast in Canada. The way she was moving around at 4:14 I thought for sure she had laid the 3rd egg. Then thought at 4:19 I saw a 3rd egg but at 4:21 i know I saw 3 eggs. Couldn't miss them. Time could be a minute or 2 out I guess. I've seen all 3 a few times since. I knew your camera would give us the exact time in the UK. Now we wait for the 4th and final egg. It is now 12:24 am here so I am off to bed.

Peregrine Project Member (Nick M.) said...

Thanks for letting us know, Abby-Lynn.I'll upload a YouTube video in a few minutes capturing the moment the 3rd egg was laid - well, the sound of it.
It was a good spot - go get some sleep, and we'll see you again.
