Some other peregrine sites

Here are six photos of other places where peregrines either nest or have been seen perching over the years .....maybe you can name them?
No. 1 - on the eastern side of the UK

No. 2 peregrines have been recorded here since the 16th century but don't breed
No. 3 Not such a pretty building........and not that far away
No. 4 The first site with a peregrine web cam in the UK though it didn't last
No. 5 This is very difficult but the town has connections with a certain Iron Lady

No. 6 Peregrines only perch here but they nest nearby

No prizes for guessing the answers but it may amuse you while you are pondering the New Year (and do have a Happy One!). I'll put the answers on here tomorrow evening....if I remember!

St Wulfram's chuch is in Grantham and peregrines have nested there for a few years now, inspired by Derby (the nest box organisers - not the birds themselves - thoiugh who knows!).
Sadly the birds failed to lay last year (possibly due to the snow) and now major restoration works on the church will prevent the pair from nesting this year (2014). To read about this site go to http://pegcam.blogspot.co.uk/

Re. No. 4.....Lorraine should know this one!
This summer, the pair were observed cooperatively attacking buzzards flying close to the nest. they even killed one and probably more! Why they are so aggressive towards buzzards at this site we don't know. At Derby we have seen occasional attacks on passing buzzards but nothing like the frequency or agressiveness shown at this site.

Ooops - yes!

I should have spotted No4 - it's St.Michael's Church in Exeter, where initially two ravens set up nest, but were ousted by two peregrines. Though the peregrines in question decided not to use the church as a breeding site, it was a source of inspiration to Nick Dixon at the time, who then went on to assist the Derby team in the design and construction of the present day Derby nest platform.

I tuned in at midnight last night, but sadly none of the birds were present, nor could I hear the bells ringing in the New Year. I did spot the odd "frozen" firework in the sky though, so it looked like Derby was having a grand old time seeing in the NY. Here in Plymouth, they love their fireworks ( 2nd to their pasty's that is ) and so there was plenty of that going on, along with all the hooting from the ships in the Dockyard!

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE !

Come on people, put me out of my misery, where is no 2? No 1 was a give away as (I believe) it is unique as a cathedral having 3 towers. The peregrines there don't have a platform, they find their own spot which can move from year to year. The RSPB run a very good watchpoint in the season and install a camera. I don't think the images go out on the internet but they have a screen at the watchpoint. I'm very fond of this city and try to make at least one "peregrination" of my own there each year. The city has another special thing - copies of Magna Carta and The Charter of the Forest. And they have a fantastic Christmas market.

The tallest spire in the country Sue....in a county that most people drive through to get to 'better' holidaying places....and you wouldn't have to go too far to see a great bustard either.

Thanks for the clue Nick, I won't spoil the game for anyone still guessing. As a further clue, this cathedral is also the site of another copy of the Magna Carta to link it with my earlier Lincoln comments. Incidentally, there are only 4 copies of MC and the other 2 are at the British Library.

A bit of googling tells me it might be Salisbury Cathedral ?

Well done everyone - all the sites have now been named correctly.
Peregrines nest in every county in England now, both on natural and 'unnatural' sites so, wherever you are, there is probably a peregrine nest within at most about 50 miles of you....at a guess.

Thank you Nick B, it was enjoyable and something to do whilst waiting to see the new year in!

I haven't seen one of the birds yet this year. They must be still hung-over lol.
