Tony's Leaving Service and 'do' (and nest clean up)

On Thursday 2nd February, there will be a service in the cathedral to celebrate both Candlemas and Tony Grantham's departure from the post of Head Verger.
The service starts at 7.00pm and will be a Communion Service with the choir singing a setting

by Widor. There will be 'incense and much pomp & ceremony' apparently!
The service should end about 8.15 and it will be followed (after a short pause while the choir and clergy change out of their cassocks etc) with presentations and some sort of a 'party', the details of which have not yet been announced.
Everyone is welcome either for the service or the presentations and 'party' or both.
We hope to see some of you there......

Nick B and Nick M

Ps. An abseil to clean up the nest and sort out the fallen camera is planned within the next week or two, depending on the weather (it needs to be calm and dry preferably). More on this nearer the time....

Dear Tony
I wish you a fond farewell and I am so sad not to be able to come to the cathedral on 2nd February to say so in person. I will be progressing northwards up the coast of Norway in hot (or do I mean very cold?) pursuit of the Northern Lights as a big birthday treat (my birthday is 3rd Feb and I will be exactly 3 days older than the reign of our Queen) God bless you for all you have done for the project and warmest wishes for the future. Perhaps we'll meet one day at a Watch Point? I do hope so!

Have changed to a temporary Bucks bird picture (for the Waxwing winter of 2011), better one of our peregrine loction HOPEFULLY to follow later in the year. [At least, I HOPE I've managed to change my profile picture!!!]

Best wishes to Tony. He has been a great member of the Peregrine team, and will certainly be missed. The photos of Tony at work with the birds are wonderful. Many thanks to him for his inaugural and continuing role in this project.

Webcam 2 shows a miserable misty and wet day in Derby. Webcam 1 has a peg. sitting waiting it out!
(is it the male or female? - size differentiation is hard when there's only one there!)

Nosey Neighbour

Nice story on RSPB web site about somebody in Gloucester who has a pregerine visiting their window sill.

One on the ledge down from camera 1 today - still not sure about the sex. Feel I have some vague recollection about, apart from size, female and juvs have breast stripes going one way and males the other???? I must go and look it up when I get time - but for now I have just two hours to read 3 hours seminar worth of law material! That Stroud story was great Don, isn't it wonderful how peregrines at last clawing their way back from the edge of extinction! Sites like this one have done so much to shine the light of interest on them and help all of us who care to feel we are doing something to help our world. Thanks Derby :)

Have just read that excellent RSPB article about peregrines in Stroud, saw they mentioned a number of "iconic locations" with peregrines and simply couldn't believe it didn't mention DERBY, the first and best urban study site (in my opinion!) I've contacted the RSPB to tell them how much I enjoyed the article but they shouldn't forget to mention Derby another time, even though it's not an RSPB project. :)

A very good close-up of a peregrine in front of the pud cam just now.
Thanks for mentioning the proposed abseil/reset/cleanup. Would it be possible to give advance notice of the intended day (even if the day itself has to be postponed for some reason)? Then anyone who wants to watch can make a note in their diary. Many thanks.

... And I can now just see part of a peregrine on the scrape ledge. The pud cam one has gone, though maybe this is he/she.

Annie: the likely day for the abseil etc is this coming Tuesday afternoon, starting about 1.30 but it will depend on the weather and also on how long it takes to prepare for the abseil. The stand-by date if the weather is no good is the following Monday 6th.

I went to the abseil last year for the nest clean up. It was bitterly cold but well worth getting chilly for. Amazing to watch the chaps come down the ropes with the bags and ropes.

Hoping to come down again as I am on leave from work next week!
