Third Egg

Third Egg
At 20:40pm our third egg arrived, it seems.
I missed it myself as I was busy uploading the video clips of the last two egg-laying moments to YouTube!

Below is the first egg being laid at 11pm on 1st April 2011, after keeping us all guessing and worrying why she was so much later than last year. Had we got a new female, one expert asked. The answer was that we certainly weren't aware of one of the pair being replaced - but it wasn't beyond the realms of possibility.

Here's the second egg, laid at 11.20am on 4th April. Listen very carefully and you can actually hear the sound of it hitting the gravel!

An excellent video, last year saw the 1st one actually laid, but this year missed both 1st and 2nd, but video makes up for it. Just caught Phoebe's comment at 2028, then inbetween egg laid and I then saw it in front of her then she eased up to roll it under with the other two.

A third egg?? Logged on earlier but saw there was definitely an egg on the outside rather than underneath – cooling it down to match the others?

Bit later than I thought, but only 4 hours or so. If there is a fourth, I’d go for midnight Friday onwards till dawn.

Three little egg sitting all alone...

Perhaps it's my work browser but all I'm getting is two videos of the first laying.

Lovely vid though, looking for the next one now.

11.08 Tiercel on the eggs, Falcon on the opposite side ledge, not sure how long she's been there. A while I imagine.

11.12 Keeps looking over at the tiercel, head forward to him but he's not moving and she seems be content where she stands at the moment.

11.18 Missed the event but the Falcon has flown off, Tiercel gets up and moves to the ledge before flying off a few seconds to 18.19.

Eggs! 1, 2 and 3. Missing one.

Both birds are on the tower.

Further to my last post. Perhaps we should call the Falcon Mary and the Tiercel Lamb.

Mary had a little Lamb it's feathers were white and gray like snow, which had been trod in by everyone walking over it, Everywhere that Mary went
Lamb was sure to go. It followed her to the Scrape one day so she shoo'd him off to go hunting.

I vaguely remember some other poems in the past being posted, perhaps last year. I don't think mine would win any do you?

We have been watching the falcon this morning and she left the nest for about 5 minutes so we have had a really good view of the three eggs.

Hi everyone, well 3 eggs that is very good news indeed. It's getting eciting now wondering if there will be the usual 4. We are off to a very good start even if we did have to wait so long. Thanks for posting the videos.

Hi there Anonymous in San Francisco! Just been watching the peregrine cam on the PG & E building in SF. Fantastic shots of the tiny chicks that are hatched. My sister in law lives in Albany and recommended this site to me.
Great news for us here in Derby - it will soon get very exciting!

I know during the laying process it is not unusual to the parents to leave the eggs exposed for periods of time, but once the last egg is laid one or other usually stay on them all the time. Each time I've checked today there has been a bird on the eggs. Is it possible we shall only get three this year?

We wached the viedo and at the end we heared a chime and it made us jump. The peregrine wasnt scared of the chime and we saw the peregrine laying an egg at night time. we sor the other egg beeing layed as well. when the egg droped onto the gravl we herd a klik sound. We saw the female peregrine scweesing the egg out and her tail lifted up. And she is clever.

It's lovely to be able to watch the falcon's again this year. And the weather seems to have turned nice again too.

I am very much looking forward to visiting family in Derby this weekend, and will have a wander past the Cathedral on Sunday and see if I can catch a glimpse

Thanks Green Class and Kingsway Planets. You have all clearly been watching very closely. Isn't nature wonderful?

Hey children - do you think our peregrines ought to get on CBBC's Live'n'Deadly programme on TV? If so, can you tell us what exciting, scary thing you'd want to see happen on the show? They just sent an email to ask us for ideas for their next series. So, we'd love it if you wrote down your ideas and sent them to me. I can pass on the best suggestions to get Derby's amazing peregrine falcons onto CBBC TV. Now how cool would that be?

Craig said...

@PM

That would be cool indeed, but I don't think your Peregrines are scarey at all. Not even the Pigeons are afraid of them, hence sitting on the scrape with the Falcon.

Jokes aside... you could suggest some feeding time to chicks. The ripping up of a nice juicy birdy to feed to the very cuit young may scare/upset young persons and those of a weak stomach. Just what the BBC should be showing!

Craig,

i wonder if she lay another egg then that would make it her 4th egg

Hope she will give us a 4th egg soon ;p.

jean (Scotland) said...

I was wondering the same as anonymous. She has been on the eggs every time I have looked, so maybe she has started to incubate them. That may be a good thing, better to have three healthy than two not survive like last year

Hello Mary T--The PG&E scrape is really fun to watch, although the nestlings eventually become so mobile that they wander away from the boundaries of the camera! Quite frustrating sometimes. Another site to check is the Indianapolis, Indiana site--currently 4 eggs on the 34th floor of an office building in Monument Circle, downtown Indy. The website is www.indyfalcons.com. I must say that the Darby website is much superior what with the video, streaming and even sound. I love to hear the cathedral bells--reminds me of my misspent youth in Southport, Lancs. Cheers from San Francisco!

@Mo, 4 all - I'll live with that (come on Notts!), lets hope it stays like that for hatching and fledging.

08.42 Falcon on the eggs. Tiercel preening on the other side ledge. She's keeping her beady eye on him.

08.48 She's moving around a touch, only saw 3 eggs then, but she was blocking the shot. Tiercel still on the ledge No longer preening. Avoiding eye contact with the Falcon I think, He's looking away from her. She's still giving him the evil eye, head down low to the gravel.

08.59 Big streatch by the Tiercel, will he now make his move? Nope, back to preening. This must be to give the Falcon a false sense of security.

09.00 Preening over, he had a look towards her. She's not moving her gaze from him.

09.04 Back to the preening tactic. Give up little Tiercel, she's not moving. She's still not moving her gaze. Interesting partnership they have.

09.08.51 Ospreys at Loch of Lowes just mated. Took the male some time to get to her. She's been calling for ages. She's standing on the edge of the nest and he flew in. She's gone all quite now.

09.13 Ospreys: Male just flew in and is making up the nest, moving twigs about. And he's off again.

As for the Derby Peregrines, nothing happening there. Neither are moving, more particually the Falcon, she's solid in her position.

09.16 Had to check... nope not a camera freeze. She's looking around a bit now. Still watching him though.

09.17 Couple of stretches fromthe Tiercel. Is he preparing to go? Doing the can can again, both legs up... not at the same time. It perhaps won over the Falcon, she's moved her head slightly. But not for long.

This post is getting longer and the birds haven't even done anything.

09.19 Nevermind: Tiercel has moved into the nest box. His back to the Falcon, who hasn't moved, head up high in what looks like a surprised position, then immedaitely back to the ledge. She must have gave him a stern warning. He's looking not so relaxed about his position now.

09.22 Back to preening, I don't think that's going to win her over now... try the can can.

So he does at 09.23 - looks funny. But did it win her over... she's moved her head to her right, no longer got a full gaze on him, it worked! He's still got his leg raised, but not for too long.

09.25 The Falcon gets up. She's moving herself around, didn't see any little eggies. Tiercel has a look but no opportunity arose to take over the eggs.

Craig said...

10.42 Nottingham's Falcon has got up off the scrape and is doing a LOT of shouting out. Must be after the Tiercel. She's also moving a lot. She's flown. Eggs appear to be unattended. Can only presume the Tiercel is somewhere nearby.

Looks like the Falcon has returned to the eggs. Toilet break maybe.

As for Derby's couple. They're back to the Tiercel still on the ledge and the Falcon watching him carefully.
