During an Open Day people will be able to tour the tower, watch bell-ringing demonstrations and try ringing one themselves.
Doors to the Cathedral tower will be open from 10am until 4pm and admission is £2 for adults and £1 for children (over eights only).
For details of other forthcoming events at Derby Cathedral, follow this link to the What's On page of their website.
Shown below is a superb new video taken by John Salloway on 22 June, showing three juveniles being fed. This is taken from John's own blog, for which many thanks. He does warn viewers that it can get a little gory - but as we keep saying on this site, that's nature.

Drat, I knew that was on and I can't go! I have the leaflet, and it says the bellringers will be doing a "mini ring, in front of the cathedral" so I suspect it might be handbells? I'm off to do a different sort of music - singing Mozart with the English National Opera (just a public educational day, nothing that elated) I hope you have a lovely day though, Derby Cathedral and get lots of visitors. Thank you for all you do, especially for the peregrine project - thanks for giving them a home!
watched the video wow! really enjoyed it thank you.
@ Phoebe, yes being 8hrs behind you I see them at different times :)
So long as I live, I will never understand the evil that some men do.
rare birds killed
Don't watch the video if you are squeamish.
They call us Brits a nation of animal lovers. Makes me sick.
I don't need to watch videos to see the evil that the few do - besides I AM extremely squeamish. I did however sign up to that RSPB birds of prey petition that somebody (was it you Terry???) and not only do I have the warm glow of knowing I did the right thing, but a fab free booklet arrived. I'm sure the persecutors - both of animals and humans - are in a tiny minority, but the existence of such people at all is the reason I am now studying law - I feel I am best to learn how to fight with my head as well as my heart.
if anyone wants a 'fix' of juvenile peregrines you can always check out the birds that are nesting on the radisson hotel in winnipeg, manitoba. they have not left the nest yet. just remember the time difference!!
http://www.cbc.ca/manitoba/features/falcon/
they've nested there for quite a few years......not such a lovely setting as derby cathedral, of course!!
steph (canada)
oh and there's also the peregrines on the sheraton hotel in hamilton, ontario - they've all left the nest but apparently giving great displays of 'learner' flying in the downtown area.
there's a great deal of info on this site as they've been successfully breeding for a number of years.

Thanks for the information on hamilton and other places. Will def. check them out. If anyone has information about other sites in Canada please let us know.
Good luck with your studies, Sue.
Your country needs you.
Oh, BTW, the link I gave earlier doesn't lead directly to a ghastly video. You lovely, caring people can still read the sad story by clicking the link. I wouldn't post a direct link to a video that would seriously distress anyone, especially kids.
You can read the story without watching the video.
@ Steph Canada
I have tried signing up for the Manitoba site you have suggested. I can't seem to get very far. Did you sign up and have you had trouble? It's very frustrating. I Found this Derby site to be much easier. Help would be appreciated.
one on the pudding cam, one on the scrape
Ann,
I tried signing up for the Manitoba site after I read your post. It seems to work for me.
The register link (I forget what they call it and it is no longer showing now that I've done that) is near the bottom of the webcam page.
You then have to fill in a bunch of tiresome stuff. I did get a bit confused because after I clicked the not Canada button I tried to fill in my country in the field above it, but it really wants it in the field below it.
Then it complained that I hadn't chosen a long enough user name. Finally it said things were go and it would send me a confirmation email. It took 2-3 minutes for that to show up, and unlike most, it is click if you don't want to confirm, so I just ignored it.
I then had to retrieve the webcam page and refresh it to see that it knew I was logged in.
Phoebs,
Besides people posting they have seen the peregrines, there are still photos being added to Flicker, so you can get your Derby fix there :-) if you don't see them on the webcam.
@ Karen Anne,
thanks I have got an official e-mail address with them. But I can't seem to log in. I have an official user name also. Will have a look at it later. Maybe it's just too late in the evening for me to concentrate. I will keep at it and try and sort it our in the morning. Will let you know how it goes. Thanks for responding.
Regards Ann
@ Karen Anne, have been meaning to ask you for quite some time now. What does that green thing on top of the Jurys Inn building remind you of? Please let me know as I want to know if it is the same thing it reminds me of.
Regards Ann.
Off to bed now.
There's a juvenile scouring the scrape.
Not finding any food the juvenile has decided to settle down in the scrape to get a nap, just like a chick would do.
@ Anne Canada
I thought the thing on top of Jury's was maybe to prevent a lighting strike but it is just a wild guess
I have changed a few setting on the video I uploaded.
See comments in my latest post at

A good breakfast for 2 juveniles on pudding cam
This might sound totally obscure but if you just take a very glance at the "thing" on top of Jurys it almost looks like a miniature Statue of Liberty. OK, so I have a vivid imagination ..... But I agree that it is probably a lightening deflector.
Ann,
I just looked at it and thought, a seal with its mouth open to catch fish :-)
@Sue Thank you for the note you left for me when you visited Derby Museum last week, Suue. Glad you enjoyed the visit, and hope to meet you sometime soon.
I'd be interested to learn of your tantalising ideas for grant or other fundraising.
If anyone is a composer and would like to supply us with some of their own music for free use as background music for any video compilations we might put together, that would be absolutely wonderful.
The "thing" on Jury's Inn is, I suspect predominantly just for ornament; to make the structure visually more interesting as you approach it on our inner ring road.
Like our exciting new Westfield Centre, it has quite an impact on our city skyline, so I suspect that's it's purpose, and to draw the eye upwards. Take a look at this image:
http://is.gd/1g1o2
Sorry, I've been meaning to ask this for weeks - why is it called a 'pudding' cam?
@Tom A good question, Tom! Perhaps you'd care to use the "search blog" box on the top left corner of this site. Type in "pudding cam" - and click "search blog". Then scroll down to the bottom of all the search reults - to a couple of entries I wrote around January 2008 when I was experimenting with ways to fix up the camera. That should give you your answer.
I do appreciate the name "pudding cam" has somehow stuck in popular usage, though "tower cam" is clearly a far more informative label!
Well to all those that guessed what that thing on top of the building reminded me of. Julie got it right. Well done Julie. Yes The Statue of Liberty. I thought I had a vivid immagination. Seems you do too. Shall we say "Great Minds Think Alike" lol lol. Thought Karen Anne would get it first. Got onto the manitoba site ok now. Thanks to those who helped.
Ann
Glad I am not the only one who "sees things" :-) Now about that cloud which passed by .....
Hi all birdcam addicts!
Try the following site - loads & loads of birdcams all over the world!
http://www.beakspeak.com/index.php/birdcams/
PS Thanks to the Derby Cathedral group for their magnificent afforts this season and rescuers etc. Fantastic site.
@ Julie
Which cloud was that? Looks like there are lots in Derby right now. Oh what a gray day. When you get to my age you begin to see all kinds of things :) lol.
If anyone has been down town Derby to-day could you please let us know if the birds are visible and if they are flying further a field yet. Thanks
@ Alan 165
Thank you so much for the web address for webcams. Just had a quick look. It's great lots of interesting bird cams from all over the world.
Definitely worth the visit and may keep us occupied till next year in Derby.
Alan 165
Thanks for that link. Maybe I won't be getting withdrawal symptoms after all!
I think our Peregrines are enjoying Peer Gynt!
one on the tower cam :) one on the scrape
That's Dad in the scrape and a youngster on the tower cam.
And a nice spiders web (and owner) on the right camera!
@ Ann (canada) and Karen Anne,
sorry, a bit late logging on today - shopping expedition!! glad you both managed to get onto the site(s) - it's actually a lot easier to just google either winnipeg manitoba peregrines or hamilton ontario peregrines - you will eventually find the correct site.
still prefer the derby site which i heard about on radio derby when it first started - i was visiting family in burton on trent (yes, burton born and bred!)...but any site that let's us into the lives of these beautiful birds is worth a look, isn't it?
the derby team are the best!!! steph (canada)
@ Ann (canada),
or you could just go to...
www.cbc.ca/manitoba....scroll down the page to manitoba features and there is a head shot pic of a falcon - below that is the link to the webcam.
steph (canada)
Hopefully, this link will work:
Manitoba webcam
If it does, right-click the image and choose fullscreen.
2 asleep, one on the tower cam, one on the scrape
@ Steph Canada
Thanks but I found it worked out ok earlier. I think I was just too tired that evening to figure it out. Alan 165 posted a good website did you see it. I went on and found it great all kinds of bird webcams from all over the world. But I am still looking forward to my trip to Derby in September Just the birds are still around.
Can anyone tell me how to remove a post or correct a post.Or do you just have to start again???????
Also would like to know how to post a picture on my blog entry.
Thanks a million
Ann,
I think you have to have a blogger account to be able to delete one of your posts; there will be a little trash can visible below each of your posts in that case.
Unfortunately, I think blogger does not have the ability to include a picture in a comment, but you can include a link. Here are the directions for that -

lovely shot on the tower cam
@ Karen Anne
Thanks for the info will give it a try. I see another cloudy looking day in Derby.
Karen Anne who is the picture you use on your blog entry?
For Anne in Canada....if you google.. Epcor, Genesee.. go to the site and on the left hand side click 'Peregrine Falcons at Genesee' up the cam comes. The chicks are still at their fluffiest best!! If you already have this ..my apologies. If my memory serves me right is it round the Edmonton area. The link was far too long to put here!!
Whilst I've been busy mowing the lawn it looks like the peregrines have had Sunday lunch, there is still one on the Tower cam with food and a parent possibly Dad sitting on the ledge of the scrape.
@ ANYONE Who can please help me
I did open an account last year so I could make comments. I added a photo to my profile. Is there anyway I can have that photo added to my comments that I post. I can't figure it out ( Nothing new )
maybe I should change my name to
Ann (thick as two planks of wood):)
I see so many of you have figured out how to do it Can you please let me in on the secret. THANKS
@ Anne (Canada) and anyone else of course,
you can also go the the canadian peregrine foundation website and on the list at the left there is 'button' for live webcams - there are several at the moment including toronto, mississauga and london.....who knew we had so many peregrines as neighbours??? as you move your cursor over the page it is actually a flying falcon!!!

@ Audrey (london uk),
thanks for the info on epcor - nice webcam view of the nest site

Ann,
If you click on a blogger's name it do an odd little thing like collapse their post and then will bring up their profile. Mine has info about my avatar.
I clicked on yours, but it only collapsed your post, no profile. So I looked at my profile, and there is a link Edit Profile, and that has a share my profile. I have that checked, maybe yours is not checked and if you check it and then save the edited profile, your photo will show up. Let me know if that doesn't work.
@ Karen Anne Thanks Karen I will try that now and see what happens. Will let you know if it works well I guess I will post something and then we will know if it works right
@ Karen Anne I checked to see if there was a check mark in that spot you suggested and there is. I have re-done a few things and clicked save. See if that makes a difference. I was also just now wondering if it has anything to do with those orange letters saying choose an identity. right under where you put the word verification? Maybe I should put the spot in the Google Account and put in my username in stead of the spot being in Name/URL ???
I have been watching Toronto site for a couple of years now as we are regular visitors there to see relatives. In fact I told our nephew who has lived in the Toronto area for years about the site when we last visited in October 2008.
There are some amusing details within the blog on the Sheraton Hotel peregrines (Toronto) where one of the newly fledged birds landed within their swimming pool (which goes into a small outer courtyard as well as inside - good for summer weather but not your cold winters!) and they found him on a chaise-long without a towel the blog said. Having stayed at the Sheraton we knew exactly where they meant. Brought back happy memories of Toronto.
Also keeping up to date with peregrines on the King Street site in Toronto.
Will miss them once the birds have flown.
Ann, under the word verification, choose an identity, mine shows Karen Anne (Blogger). So yes, I am guessing you need to use that to have stuff work. Worth a try anyway.
I stay logged in all the time. Every so often I find myself logged out, I don't know if blogger does that periodically or what, so I have to login again. If I am logged out, this doesn't work.
@ Karen Anne I will try and see what happens. Thanks so much for your help it is so much appreciated. I sm so sorry I am causing so many problems
Hope the bellringing day went well at the cathedral yesterday. I also noticed that it was well-dressing in Derby, which likewise, I hope went well. I have no idea what that "thing" is on top of Jury's - I assumed it was mainly an eye-catcher. I did go in when I visited derby a couple of weeks ago, and it's a very smart hotel. I obtained a handful of leaflets from the museum and gave then to Jury's, telling them that they were prominently featured on a web site that had had nearly half a million hits and they could do worse than get on board with the project. It was shameless and I don't normally do things like that but maybe it'll help to bear some fruit. The weather is pretty horrible down here - humid and thundery - how is it in Derby?
Sue: announcement coming soon about Jury's Inn's support but don't hold your breath - not megabucks, far from it......but from small acorns as they say....
The weather here today started grey but the skies cleared and it was a fine if hot afternoon and now a cooler and pleasant evening. No thunder here - yet!
Nick B (DWT)
Hey, that's a glimmer of hope on the Jury's front! Any cash they can offer helps with the win/win situation - the cameras keep rolling so we can keep watching the birds and Jury's advertises to the world. I'd like to think that my shameless begging helped a bit (to help me live down the mortification)
It's been very oppressive down here for a couple of days, unrelieved even after thunderstorms. I "peregrinated" to London's Tate Modern yesterday teatime just as black clouds rolled in and lightening started flickering roundabout. I was too scared to set out over the "wobbly bridge" in the circumstances and was "trapped" for ages waiting for it to pass. I did manage to catch a glimpse of one peregrine flying round the chimney stack. I was in London anyway, the peregrine-watch was just a side trip but it was, I am sorry to say, rather more trouble than it was worth! I still have the headache brought on
by the stifling heat in the later Tube journey in the train that broke down for a long time.
I've just upgraded to a new PC and need to load Irfan again - can anybody remind me where I can find the notes in the archive, please?
Why should they have to contibute It is not their fault our camera is capturing their immage? Would be nice if they did but do not think they should have to.
@ Karen Anne will try and see if that makes a differece Is that what U use when U post a comment?
Sorry to be such a problem
@Sue in Bucks (Scout): Update on the Bell Ringers' Tower Open Day.
Warm dry weather meant we had a good turn-out and an early visit from a Derby Evening Telegraph photographer followed by a live phone call from Radio Derby gave us some good publicity.
Visitors were treated to various presentations and demonstrations of Change Ringing on both tower and hand bells with a CCTV camera setup allowing people to watch both the bell and bell ringer in action at the same time. Most people then had a go at ringing a bell before completing the climb to the top of the tower and the spectacular views it offers.
Several regular peregrine watchers popped in and there was also a good deal of interest in the live feed from the peregrine cameras, especially when one of the adults started preparing lunch right in front of the pud-cam with the juveniles waiting patiently on the gargoyles in the background.
@ Karen Anne
Will give it a try Thanks so much for your help it is really appreciated so much. Will try tomorrow. Right now just too tired to concentrate. Did not see much of the Peregrine Falcons to-day Did you? They must be flying further a field. Oh boy time to say goodbye to them. How sad. Looking forward to my trip to Derby in September
falcon on the tower cam as dawn breaks
Re the naming of the 'pudding' cam - the explanation is pretty similar to my guess, which was that the rounded lumps of Derbyshire Gritstone seen in it's view (now covered in feathers!) looked like puddings, so not far off. I also thought that maybe the composite collection of all 3 cameras was referred to as a 'pudding', like 'pudding stone'. Anyway, this is a bit off the point, and out of date...
I think this project may have done as much for the Derby Tourism industry as most of their other websites have - judging by the pledges to come and visit from all over the world. A bit like visiting the locations of your favourite film, with the added attraction of the possibility that the actors may still be hanging around on set, months after shooting!
I was at a rehearsal in the Cathedral on Saturday afternoon. As I left, one of the birds was flying round and round the tower, calling loudly.
A report in last week's free newspaper referred to one of the young birds having been found dead on the roof of a block of flats, but I haven't seen any mention of it on this site. Have I missed something?
Kate in Derby
@ Kate
Look at the blog headed 'Sad News' It is true we did lose a youngster.
adult male on nest box , no youngsters about tho.
Well no sign of the birds but I only just signed in. Hope they have not gone for good quite yet. Was hoping to get a few more pictures before they left to make homes for themselves.
@ Karen Anne Ha Ha it worked I finally got my picture to show. I needed to sign in and out and I put the dot in remember me. Glad it worked and thanks again for your help. Don't know what I would do without you folk.
@ Tom, I agree about the project,
there still coming to Vancouver to try to catch the stars from the twilight movies!
Dad is in the scrape and a youngster on the tower cam and a youngster sitting on top of the tower cam. I don't know if it's raining in Derby but it's a thunder storm with torrential rain 16 miles away in Ashbourne!
