Some people just can't wait any longer!

This photo was sent in by Graham Whitmore who has obviously just got fed up of waiting for the first egg to hatch out.............

Nice one Graham!

Nick, is there a peregrine plush
available in Derby?

Looks like one of the RSPB 'singing birds' that you can buy over the internet from their website or elsewhere. I think they also had them in the Cathedral shop in Derby.

Come on you lot out there, make a donation for these fantastic birds, even if you can only afford a pound, think what a difference it would make and it must be worth a pound to watch these fantastic birds especially since its going to get very exciting. I've done a direct debit for £2.50 a month

I like to think the eggs have drawn down and the chick inside as pipped the shell and the hatching process is under way. The pip can almost be invisable to the eye. But enough for the process to begin

One peregrine on the eggs, the other in the pudding cam area.

In the U.S. Audubon sells those singing plush toys, how to drive your cat crazy :-)

Nick Brown (DWT) said...

Strange you should mention Audubon Karen Anne....by a strange co-incidence, the founder himself (what a great willdife artist he was too!) had a wife who came from Crich - a village in mid-Derbyshire!
A friend of mine has just been researching this lnk...

anyone know whythe multi view is not working? i just get the pudding cam

Peregrine Project Member (Nick M.) said...

@wayne1984 Yes. I know!
It's because I've changed it for a little while.
I did try to post an explanation earlier today but somehow it appears not to have got through.

Basically, I thought a change would be nice, just as I try to zoom in and out from time to time to give a bit of variety to the images everyone sees. I'm also very keen to get a good screen capture of our peregrine on top of the tower witht the new hotel behind it. Plus the other nest cam has a stonking great spider in front of its lens which doesn't look too good in the dark uner IR light.
As soon as there's significant right-side activity I'll change it over.

PS Lots and lots of activity by "Mum" on the eggs tonight. I tried to lsiten in for any noises early this evening, but the bell ringers were busy practicing. I'll try again a bit later tonight once I've put the finishing touches to a new Flickr Group we're planning so that everyone can upload screen shots and other photos they've taken.

I hope this explasnatin makes some sense. In haste
Nick M.
There is still

The cathedral shop is stuffed to the gunnels with peregrine-related goods - there's a whole flock of soft-toy birds massed in the shop window ... and jolly nice it all is. I saw it for myself on Sunday - but sadly couldn't buy anything on that occasion as the shop was shut (also couldn't get a nice cup of tea and a bun from the equally tempting looking cafe) Oh dear, what a shame, I shall just have to visit again soon.
Can somebody remind me of the eth (estimated time of hatching) and also, did somebody report that the Chichester peregrines have had a hatching? Anybody know about Lincoln's? (which interestingly hatched on exactly the same day as Derby's last year)

wayne1984 said...

thankyou for explaining nick, will you be going down to the cathedral green tommorrow? as it would be nice to put a face to a name etc? i will be down there most of the day tomorrow

Peregrine Project Member (Nick M.) said...

@sue in Bucks You're right about peregrine stock in the Cathedral shop. Stuffed to the gunnels. Tony will be posting more information on the new cathedral cafe very soon - probably after the eggs have hatched.
My guess for hatching is Wednesday; Colin's is Thursday plus or minus a day. (He knows best!!)

@Wayne1984 I may be down tomorrow, but if the chicks hatch I shall undoubtedly be inside the cathedral poring over a hot DVD recorder. Or I might just be crashed out at lunchtime in our museum staffroom, having worked my socks off night and day on this project as, indeed, have others.

I'm always worried when we make changes to the way things appear as its never possible to please everyone all the time. But having feedback on what people want to see makes it a pleasure when we can deliver.

Less activity on the nest now - Mum seems to be quite passive, unlike earlier.
Still in haste, Nick M.

ok Nick, well i will be the one with a brace on my left leg due to injury. hope to see you tomorrow. i for one will have black rings round my eyes after watching the cams all night

Karen Anne said...

Mom (or whoever is incubating the eggs right now) seems quite alert and a bit hyper, given that its the middle of the night over there.

Sigh, if Froona were here, she'd have great pictures. Someone mentioned on the other forums that May 1st would be her birthday.

Ruth Z said...

Oh no!! Oh dear, dear, dear... What a time for the camera to freeze. It's still stuck on 6:33:22, as mentioned earlier by "Anon".

I bet this is when chick #1 makes its move :-(

chrisx said...

I think you are all correct - camera is frozen :-( Gosh this is exciting! However a week or so ago I did wonder what on earth I was doing staring at a bird sitting on eggs. Is this the ornithological equivalent of watching paint dry??!!

Fabien said...

Camera is frozen ... bad bad timing ;/

Nick B (DWT) said...

Please be patient - there's only one person who can fix this at the moment and they've been alerted.....I'm sure things will be back to normal as soon as....
The project team is more or less on call 24/7 but we do need a few breaks and a bit of sleep occasionally....though we do understand your frustrations of course!

Thank you, guys! Hope we don't wear you down.

n1ck said...

did anyone get any stills of the changeover? and how do you put pictures we capture on this blog?

Anonymous said...

Think one of the eggs is starting to pip. I have a screen capture

chrisx said...

SOrry - just missed the changeover - hit the buttons a fraction late. Nice view of the eggs. They are both quite jumpy now - presumably the eggs are getting noisy :-)

kitz said...

I saw changeover ealier. It looks like the right egg could be pipped but Im not certain, there is some marks on it of some sort.

I was watching last night and it looked like mum kept checking the right egg.

Kishore said...

Its beginning to get eggsiting again. I think the left most egg has a little crack in it. I just got a glimps of it when the eggs were exposed a little. Here the link to the image which I captured. (Hope it works)

Screen cap of the egg I think is pipped.
Pipped egg?I've uploaded it so you can make up your own minds.

Ruth Z said...

Whether it's pipped or not the birds are extremely restless.

That's a good idea to open a photobucket site - I may do the same so I can share too!

Colin said...

Eggs pip lower down the egg to start about on the draw down line.
I see what you mean about the egg if indeed the chick that has chipped the shell? it has expanded and got up into the air space (passed the pipping stage) and peparing to hatch.

Colin

Fabien said...

@n1ck : I got 3 pictures of a changeover dated 24th

Colin said...

But a detailed photo up of a peregrine egg hatching on my blog

Thanks Karen Anne for mentioning Froona and saying you believe her birthday was 1st May. What a wonderful day to have been born on - MAYDAY! All rebirth and welcoming to the Spring. The most wonderful place to be on that very special day is PADSTOW (but I can't get there this year - shucks!) But I shall always be reminded to think of and remember Froona now on Mayday.
Thanks to all for the blogs too - I can honestly say I get almost as much pleasure (and certainly tons more learned information) from reading what everyone else is saying than actually looking at the birds. Almost ..... but not quite. Keep it up "team".

Right, I've uploaded most of my Peregrine snaps to Photobucket:

http://s599.photobucket.com/albums/tt76/RuthZFrance/Derby%20Peregrines%202009/

The guest password is Peregrines :-)

If you slide your cursor otno a pic it will give the title, which should give a date (approximate for earlier pics) and the activity, if not self-explanatory.

Some of the photos show lovely, fresh pellets at the edge of the scrape,

That crack in the egg certainly looks to be getting bigger.
