What else to watch while we wait?

As the season progresses, it does seem gradually less and less likely that the Derby Cathedral peregrines will adopt the new nest box that we needed to build for them. This is obviously frustrating for everyone involved with the Project Team who've committed so much time and effort in caring for our birds, not only this year, but over the last 20 years. We know it's frustrating for many of you, too - our dedicated webcam watchers and blog readers.

Along the way, we have tried to address many of the concerns and sensible suggestions that some of you have made on the comments section so that you appreciate the reasoning behind the actions of our volunteer team.

Meanwhile, there are many opportunities to watch other webcams focused on different bird species around the country, and to learn more about their lives and perhaps return to the Derby web cams for next season.

Here are some links to a few live cams in the UK of  other species that you may find of interest. A few have no sound and all are best watched during daylight hours. Feel free to add a comment with a link to your own personal favourite wildlife webcam.

The (introduced) white storks at the Knepp Estate in Sussex:

The ospreys nesting at Rutland Water:

The exciting spoonbill colony in North Norfolk:

The white tailed eagles nesting in the Outer Hebrides:

A goshawk nest at Loch Garten in the Cairngorms:

and a barn owl nest in Yorkshire:

There are many more, especially of ospreys and peregrines  as you will know.
If not, search for them on You Tube.

Incidentally, peregrines nesting in UK towns and cities have increased massively in the last 20 years.
There are now nesting urban peregrines in almost every English county with as many as 50 pairs nesting in Greater London!
Nest success rates are higher than those in the countryside where threats from egg and chick thieves and from deliberate persecution still occur every year.

Thanx for the info .. keep up the good work !

While it is disappointing for viewers it must be so much worse for those of you who have put so much effort into the new nest site. Thank you all for your hard work and dedication.

Anonymous said...

I've not seen both peregrines together for a while now, do you think the female has been deserted by the male ?

Anonymous said...

back again

Bless her, it's probably hard standing on one leg when its windy!

Some in & outs from 13.39 ... Busier for sightings today!

Wendy Bartter said...

I guessed it was windy there as the position of the big slates has altered again! Yes it was the female

I'm glad that I have seen both of them together, I was starting to think she had been left on her own

Something we've not seen for a while ... male bringing prey gift for his female

its encouraging that they're still displaying mating behaviours, fingers still crossed!

Jo said...

Multiple visits today so far, I’m quite pleased. (One home right now)

Jo said...

Gone again...

Meanwhile, Leicester have 3 cameras on 4 eggs but their streaming is kaput - perhaps a tie-up for a neighbour ?.

No - not involved at any other site, just a watcher.

Fulham & Barnes have first chick, fed so far on parakeets ... a balanced diet of meat and greens?. Alas, male in last year has been shot, knocked around and now chased off by younger interloper. Female is feeding, incubating, hunting and also chasing off another female.

It's all go !

Wendy Bartter said...

Very sad news from FaB, chick & eggs definitely in peril if another female takes over!

Wendy Bartter said...

Didn't see either of our pair today between 11 am and 8 pm unless they visited in the hour & a half I was unable to view/record around 4 - 5.30 pm!

Bright n early this morning

F&B update.

Newer female seems to have largely disappeared, but new male patrolled wall for a few days, then edge of box, then brought food from own stash to mother, who duly fed the chick. Other eggs unhatched, last year they hatched 2 (Zig & Zag), a rarity for them.

Anonymous said...

Let's hope they return next season

Jo said...

I open the camera and see a pigeon perched on the old nest. 🥲
At least we got a few visits in the morning…

Anonymous said...

A female paid a visit earlier, new male flirted, Azina ran out and chased her off 😂

The foreign language comment was spam, and we delete and report such posts as soon as they're detected.

I just read it and no further action the so and so' I could say alot worse but I won't

Jo said...

Right! I remember now from the video you shared here. I thought it was paler but as I watched I started to feel uncertain. 😆
Thanks for correcting me!
Also we have one home now~

Are they serious?!? I can’t say all I want either, I’m fuming.

Derby Cathedral is about to lose its wonderful Head Verger, Maddie. She and her team have been so supportive whenever I've turned up unannounced and asked for keys to the tower, and always so interested in the comings and goings of the peregrines. But the good news is she's moving on to bigger things. Guess where she's going. . . St Albans! So the peregrines there will have another staunch supporter and guardian!

Peregrine Project Member (Nick M.) said...

15:45pm, and found the male perched on the old platform. Forgot to record, so not sure when he arrived.

Wendy Bartter said...

He flew in at 15.42 and left at 15.59, preened a bit, looked around a lot ...

Yeovil Peregrine update:
The three eggs at our Yeovil site have hatched over the last couple of days!
In the early hours of this morning the third egg hatched, completing the clutch of three chicks.

Katedevon said...

Thanks anonymous and see Mike is checking females ring data so will be interesting to see if letters could be ours. she certainly seems enamoured by the male intruder (even if in the turmoil he spoiled the first lay) so we still live in hope for eggs

While I understand frustration on commenting on here. I dont think its right people calling others physcho yes ive corrected their spelling. Is needed or wanted on here and im surprised at the team for allowing such things
