One 'flu over the peregrine's nest

Update 5th January:
Wendy Bartter made this video today showing some really good bonding between the new pair:

 Original Post:

If you have read our two previous blog posts (here and here), you will be aware that our resident female peregrine falcon at the time was found dead on 12th December and that it was sent off for testing (and that a new female has arrived already to replace her).We have now been told by Defra that the dead female had indeed contracted bird flu, presumably picked up from one of its prey.
Certainly we know that other urban peregrines have died from bird flu elsewhere in the UK (in Poole and Leicester for example).

Given the range and number of birds that peregrine falcons prey upon, this is not entirely unexpected. However, it may well be that some peregrines have built up a degree of immunity to the disease over time as have some other species.

Although clearly this wasn't the case with our (former) female, let us hope the resident male and his new mate will not suffer the same fate. So far, so good.....

More than 50 bird species have been identified with bird flu in the UK this year and they include species which peregrine falcons take such as duck, gulls and woodcock and other wading birds.  At Derby, especially in autumn, we have found the remains of numerous woodcock over the years. These night migrants fly to the UK from Scandinavia, Poland and Russia each autumn after their breeding season. As they head inland from the east coast, we suspect they are drawn to the bright lights of our cities or follow rivers and other topographical features.

A woodcock, one of thousands that fly to the UK for the winter.
This one was killed by flying into a window.

Derby Cathedral tower is lit with upwards facing floodlighting, and of course Derby City itself is incredibly brightly lit at night. This makes it easy for the peregrines to spot these night migrants as they fly overhead and to fly out and grab them.

In the winter of 2009, we managed to capture webcam footage of a live woodcock being brought back to the tower just before midnight one December evening where it was then despatched and left. It wasn't eaten until several days later but the weather at the time was very cold so it would have remained quite fresh!
The video of the live woodcock being brought back can be seen below but beware it is a little gory to watch:

Some readers might also be unaware that this 2009 video clip was a 'world first' - the first ever published video evidence of a peregrine falcon catching and killing live prey at night time. Read more here

Please scroll down to the previous blog post which updates you about the new female that has arrived.

Thanks Nick M, good to have a definitive cause of death, just hope that it isn't going to be rife amongst our Peregrine population as, sadly, it seems to be on the rise! Certainly was a gory vid albeit an amazing capture! Looking forward to seeing the new female establish herself and lay eggs this coming season!

Thanks for the update , let's hope the others steer clear of this disease.

How many different adults have been involved in nesting, at the Cathedral, since 2006? Not including this new female.

Wendy Bartter said...

After Nattalie's sightings early this morning (see previous blog) there were three further short visits with no bonding, I feel that it was our new female ...

Helen said...

Good question! From memory I know there have been at least two, possibly three different females not including the present one. The original female appeared to be there for a long while. I think there may have been slightly more male birds over the years but I can't remember how many exactly. Maybe three or four? It's always very difficult to know for sure.

Anonymous said...

Two at home at the moment

Wendy Bartter said...

Sorry to have missed that

Anonymous said...

Briefly both, then 1 (female I think) spending time checking out the floor areas and having a good look around

Anonymous said...

And just flew away

Wendy Bartter said...

Male acting scared again & flying off quickly!

Anonymous said...

Just went but think the male (probably) is on one of the cameras now, can hear the odd noise

Wendy Bartter said...

14.51 til 14.57
Female in followed by male who was in & out in double quick time ... is he still wary of the new female?? She poked around the scrape for a bit!...

Anonymous said...

Oh missed it. Looking forward to seeing your footage Wendy, enjoy your lunch

Wendy Bartter said...

Think it's the female

Wendy Bartter said...

Well ... a super bad start to the New Year for me ... after being so excited at seeing the pair bonding in the same scrape & reporting above about footage ... when I went to retrieve said footage I discovered that my laptop had been on all morning without actually recording ... Sorry folks, am devestated! Also our female was already perched when I logged on around 9 am & stayed for quite a while!

Wendy Bartter said...

She was calling, presumably to the male, and flew a minute ago

Wendy Bartter said...

Female flies away calling then much noise on cam from bird or birds perching, sounded like dancing in hob-nailed boots, made the picture shake then under the crenellations ... everywhere but in the scrapes again! Maybe better luck tomorrow¬ Happy New Year all

Angie T said...

Honestly, no. My gut instinct is that he wants her to go. No pun intended, but he appears to be hen pecked, and she is pushy and has no intention of leaving. I guess there's not a lot he can do, except maybe give in.

Anonymous said...

We saw one today hunched in the rain on the platform edge. So, a number of times people have commented on the floor of the platform falling off. Has anyone an idea when and how this might be fixed. I guess if the birds dont feel its suitable to nest, they might abandon it when it comes to mating and courtship time if its still in disrepair, but tricky to fix without disturbing them?

Wendy Bartter said...

Saw that bird come in but recording has turned itself off!!

Wendy Bartter said...

More activity from today, our female in destruction mode still ...

Hi Anonymous: Don't worry. The matter is in hand and progress is being made but we'd prefer not to give further details until our plans and permissions for them are fully resolved. But rest assured, we are aware of the need to deal with matters effectively, and we believe we are doing so. We'll post on the blog when we're ready.

Emma said...

Just logged on for the first time in a while and noticed the state of the platform. Was it the snow? So sad about the female but wonderful news that a new girl has moved in so quickly. Was she waiting in the wings, I wonder? Would she be one of previous years young and would that cause inbreeding issues or are they too clever for that?

Jules said...

No it was the storm we had a few weeks ago very heavy rain.
No one has spotted a ring on her leg so she could be from anywhere it's unlikely we will ever know

Wendy Bartter said...

Likely trying to bring up a pellet
