Fast and furious growth and an update!

Update 31st May:
This video by Wendy taken today shows the youngster on the edge of the platform flapping its wings. With no siblings to accidentally push it over the edge we feel pretty confident that it will be OK but time will tell.....

The chick is growing very fast on its 'Atkin's diet' of meat, meat and more meat!

Dave Farmer (gdfotos.co.uk) took this photo of it yesterday (27th May):

Chick with parent at 27 May. Photo Dave Farmer (gdfotos.co.uk )

And this one of the formidable female flying towards him as she leaves the tower:

To read about the first Watch Point and see Wendy Bartter's recent videos (check out the comments for many more) scroll down to the previous post.

The next Watch Point is on 10th June. How big will the chick be by then?
It will have little or now white down feathers left for sure and could be on the point of fledging.......

Many thanks Dave Farmer for the great pics!
Pleased to hear you saw an early morning feed Jean, see youngster has been picking at the scraps of meat attached to that white wing ... wonder what bird that was?

If you are interested in peregrines' prey items there is analysis of prey taken by peregrines on Lundy Island. This is how to find it: website is https://hawkandowltrust.org/ then click on 'Learn an Discover' then click on 'Research Papers'.

The first article is prey items. (When selected the display is as pages in a magazine. I found it to be a bit of a puzzle how to zoom the display and turn pages but I am not tech savvy but I managed. If I can do it, you can do it!) What I found a little surprising is that there are 5 peregrine pairs on Lundy which is 2.5 miles by 1 mile.

The second article is about dispersal of chicks when they fly the nest (pun intended).

Happy reading.

Might save that for a rainy day thanks DW!

Can't understand why Dad flew off with the prey, youngster voices his indignation then has a flap!!

AM ASSUMING FLEDGING HAS HAPPENED AS NO PEREGRINES IN SIGHT

Why would you assume that, when nothing being in sight is the default this year as both cameras are pointing at only one side of the platform? The chick has been on the other side out of view most of the time.

Wendy Bartter said...

If you look carefully on cam #1 you can make out the feathers of youngster sleeping in the other scrape!

Bet it's a bit draughty up there today! It's freezing on ground level!

Wendy Bartter said...

Just had a fright ... youngster is on the ledge, got there by standing on the scrape divider ... GULP!!!

Has been windy for a couple of weeks now but birds take no notice, I am on east coast & very chilly in
strong NE winds! Brrrrrrr

It's the next stage of progression. Won't be too long before it's on the edge for quite long spells. Honing the grip it will need to have to allow it to be anchored there. Taking everything in. Gauging it's exit route - "if I jump up 25 degrees and forwards at the same time I should be OK. On the other hand, maybe I need to give it more thought. No rush still a while to go yet".

Suddenly the board dividing the scrapes has become youngster's favourite place to perch!

Wendy, I had a day out on the east coast recently. Bempton cliffs RSPB in Yorkshire. What an amazing place. Saw a peregrine amongst many other birds. Well worth a visit.

Wendy Bartter said...

Ìmagine it would be a great place to visit but unfortunately no doable for me! However we do have Peregrines nesting locally in SE Kent! No live streaming though!

It's been warm in Derby until recently though. Almost felt like summer briefly

Did he actually get anything? These parents are so casual. I dread to think of them having more than one chick another year.

Jean said...

She/He is perched on the edge again, now exercising the wings!

Anonymous said...

Probably spotted a chippy and thinking of heading down for a takeaway! Living with those parents would be like living with no transport on the wrong side of the M1 to a supermarket.

I need sedatives!! Lol More scary antics from our youngster

He's lonely and hungry isn't he. Poor little fluffkin.

I cycled past on the way home from work and heard him from the river! Got home and looked at webcam, he seems really hungry and parents are just sitting above him not paying any attention. Will have to turn off as I cannot bear listening to him. Hope he gets some food soon!!

I know I couldn't bear to watch him calling and looking up.

He was the first egg laid this year wasn't he? Probably be the first to fly then he'll be straight off to Birds for a beefpaste cob and an elephants foot!

Wendy Bartter said...

Looking now on cam #2 I feel sure that the youngster is perched on ledge beside Mum, can see fluff from top of it's head blowing in the wind every so often!

Kate said...

Thanks for your updates Wendy. Glad they are feeding him!

Mum suddenly decided to lay down in scrape, youngster comes to investigate & treads on her tail

Wendy Bartter said...

You're very welcome Kate, have to remember that there are feeds we don't see, many are completely out of sight in the other scrape ... am sure we'd notice if the youngster was seriously food deprived, noticed him/her trying to bring up a pellet earlier today!

Wendy Bartter said...

Do wish that the youngster would settle down to sleep instead of making me bite my nails down too far!

On Cam 2 is the flat roofed building to the leftthat's lit up at night a car park?

Wendy Bartter said...

Certainly looks like one Anonymous but someone from the team will no doubt let you know!

Anonymous said...

Something white with a green ring on leg just been fed about entirely to the chick. Adult has just disappeared over the ledge with the wings and feet!

Jean said...

Youngster has just had really good feed, yet another racing pigeon!!
Earlier looked quite happy perched on the ledge watching the world go by………

Anonymous said...

From one anonymous to another. Yes, the building with flat roof is the Assembly Rooms car park.

Anonymous said...

Thankyou for the information. It's very different looking from this angle, although admittedly I haven't been at ground level in the city for many years now.

Anonymous said...

I'm mainly confused seeing buses go past it. Well I assume buses, they're red. I didn't know buses went past the assembly rooms car park.

Anonymous, its a bus route for the red Trent Barton buses. They go along Full Street which is the road you can just see and is at the back of the cathedral. This is where the watch days take place. The buses then go past the council house (big reddish building) and then onto the bus station ( white zig zag building, top left)
I know this is nothing to do with peregrines but some may find it interesting!

Anonymous said...

Thanks for your explanation of the skyline etc. It's interesting seeing it from this angle.

Wendy Bartter said...

Thank you Anonymous, it is interesting!

Think our youngster may have had a little slip earlier, thankfully into the scrape, has gone into other side now, may have been startled, sorry no sound!
