We have a chipping egg today and now a first chick!

Update late afternoon 27th: Wendy has captured this video of the first chick!

And here's a screengrab of the chick being fed captured by Jean White:

Avid web cam watcher Wendy Bartter captured this super video clip yesterday morning (Thursday 27th April) which shows one of the four eggs with a hole in it and two very excited parents!

That egg hatched during the day and the others with luck, within the next 2-3 days!

And see this close up of the eggs, a screenshot taken by Laura Tooth:

The central red egg has a hole in it,,,,early 27th April

  5. @ 13.03 there was quite a tusssle as Dad wanted to take over incubation & Mum didn't want to let him, she won!

He didn't fly off, just perched then tried his luck again ten minutes later, still didn't win!!

  10. Poor Dad is absolutely desperate to see what's happening & Mum won't let him still ... he is now lying beside her at back of scrape! Lol

  11. I can just see the chick moving around underneath her now. How amazing!

    ReplyDelete
  12. I saw the chick moving when Mum sent Dad packing.
Can hear the little cheeping sounds too....
Probably too cold and wet for her to let us see chick yet. Will keep watching :-)

  13. So pleased you have had views Helen & Jean, bit difficult to get any pics though, I saw some 'fluff' & eggshell on cam #2 very fleetingly!

Amazing! Thank you so much for capturing those special moments.

  21. It's interesting to see that the first chick to hatch is from one of the red coloured eggs, which means that it was either the third or fourth egg to be laid. I wonder which one will hatch next? The reaction of the new male bird has also been very different this year. He has certainly been taking a very close interest in the hatching.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Think Dad just brought in some food for chick, Mum wouldn't budge so he's flown with it!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I had gone back to see the order eggs were laid too Helen & noticed same as you, hope this doesn't mean those first two pale ones are infertile?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Mum has just discarded that brown eggshell the chick came out of!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I see that Dad is perched on the ledge, obviously Mum doesn't want to move ... she must be getting rather hungry by now, I have only seen her leave the scrape once & then she wasn't gone for long!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hi Danielle, pleased to hear that you have enjoyed this special day, hopefully we'll see some more lovely fluffy chicks over the next day or so!

    ReplyDelete
  27. There is a large piece of egg shell visible next to mum can't see if it's a second chick. The colour is white but that may be the night vision ?

  32. Dad just came in with food but stayed on ledge eating it, never brought into scrape for Mum to feed chick & then flew off with it! Strange!
Looked on cam #2 and can see that Mum has pulled in the empty shell to incubate with the rest ... thought she would have eaten it by now?

  51. Hi everyone, having watched this falcon with her primary incubation, where I didn't feel she appeared that confident I am just wondering could this be a new falcon as well? She seems to me to be keen but not confident? I know that for the first 3 years of life there are ways to identify a young bird although I am certainty not skilled enough to do this! Is this a first time young mother? Sorry I will probably now be proved very wrong! Chris M

  52. Chick fed at 12.24. It had some but I thought it may have liked more. Chris M

  53. Definitely was a very short feed Chris, wish they would persevere a lot longer ... maybe you're thoughts on immaturity are valid, am sure someone from project team will give their thoughts on the matter!

    ReplyDelete
  54. I'm inclined to think that it is the same female because of the relatively unusual colouration of the eggs. She seems to have a pattern of laying pale, almost white eggs, followed by the more typical reddish brown colour for the remainder of the clutch. Difficult to say for certain though.

  65. Some egg shell visible on the platform that I have not noticed before. Chris m

    ReplyDelete
  66. Yep agree could be No 2....

    ReplyDelete
  67. I think that is the shell from first chick, it got pushed to the back of the scrape & gets moved around from time to time ... of course, I hope I'm wrong & there will be a second chick!

    ReplyDelete
  68. She is extraordinarily fidgety which makes me wonder what's going on underneath her??

    ReplyDelete
  69. Still only one chick, which has just been fed, but didn’t seem to get much food!!

    ReplyDelete
  70. So now we have gone from not leaving it with dad to leaving it fully unattended for nearly 10 mins that I have been watching! It's rather chilly in derby today and the chick keeps calling which makes it an easy target as a prey item !! I suspect mum may be very hungry. Chris m

    ReplyDelete
  71. It is beginning to look as if the remaining eggs are not going to hatch but let's give them another day or two.
The thinking now is that the female is a new bird as well as the male - so an entirely new pairing. That might explain the later egg laying and the somewhat inept feeding behaviour of the female.
Ed Drewitt, the national urban peregrine expert, on seeing a screenshot of the female said:
It looks like a younger bird, perhaps just coming into her 3rd calendar year. As you say, very brown, although not immature feathering. I do find adult females have a more sandier hint to their grey whilst males are a much darker black-grey.

    The project team

    ReplyDelete
  72. Certainly is acting like a female with first eggs/chick, not a patch on last year's female who was extremely adept at feeding multiple chicks! Hope she ups her game very quickly although, going on Jean's observation of this morning's feed, it hasn't happened yet ... yesterday's formula of little but often may save the day? 🤞🤞🤞🤞

    ReplyDelete
  73. Still no feed since early this morning that I've seen ... here is Mum picking all round gravel, is it to aid digestion or simply bored with waiting for prey to be delivered?? Eggs disappointingly whole!

    ReplyDelete
  88. I agree, Wendy. Neither parent seems to quite know what's involved in feeding their youngster. Looking at the chick, I'm feeling that others in past years were much larger than this tiny thing by now. This latest feed at 17:45 involved both parents bring food to the scrape, then scoffing most of it themselves in front of the wailing chick. It did finally get some, but not very much, TBH.

  108. Feeding 8.50am approx.

10 minutes. The adult was very attentive to the chick and fed it every time a sensible small amount came off the carcase. Very persistent in offering food to the chick. If the chick didn't take the food first time it was offered again until it was taken - sometimes half a dozen offerings of the same piece of food.

The chick was lively and was also persistent in taking the food. The adult did feed as well when the bits torn off were too large for the chick. It's just as important that the adult feeds too. Generally, the female would be anchored to the eggs and chick for long periods of time so she's also dependant on what the male brings in to a large degree.

    Seemed pretty normal to me.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Thank you do much for reassuring us all . Chris m

  125. Thanks for your comments Clare, I agree that Dad is much better at feeding than Mum, maybe there's hope yet?

    ReplyDelete
  126. Think of it this way.

Supposing we still had the two "expert" adults from last year. And supposing all 4 eggs hatched. How much of each kill would each of the four chicks be getting ? Average 25% which could easily be diluted if the female understandably had to have her share now and again so that could be 25% of 90%. That might be less than this year's sole chick is getting from the inexperienced adults. A pigeon divided by four may not add up to a great deal.

In reality though, there would likely have been one dominant chick getting much more than 25% so the other three would be getting less than the average. Would that also have been more than the single chick has been getting ?

It probably would be the case that expert Dad would have brought in a kill more often but overall is the result fairly even ?

Imponderables but food for thought (pardon the pun).

The new chick has no competition at present which will boost it's chances of coming through quite a bit.

If the other three eggs hatched then all bets are off.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Definitely food for thought Dave, biggest problem here as I see it is that they are not bringing in food often enough at present ... other nests I have been watching with experienced parents are seeing up to six/seven meals per day!
Their habit of eating prey on nest without feeding chick is definitely hard to watch!

    ReplyDelete
  136. Hi Emma, we think the Mum is a newbie judging by her inexperience at feeding the chick, learning on the job!
Anonymous, thanks for report of early feed, sounds as if a good one! The male bird is quite a bit smaller than the female, called a tiercel meaning a third of the size, his white chest is clear of marks, his feathers are a darker grey, his yellow parts much brighter & has smaller feet!
Scoobi, eggs may not be fertile or embryo may have failed to develop or may have died during the hatching process!

    ReplyDelete
  137. Some footage of Mum constantly picking at s rape floor, hungry or bored waiting for male to bring prey, chick looks stronger, preening his chest, have seen him twice now aiming poos at tbe back wall! Lol
