The season draws to a close

Update (23/8/16) We had a break in service from our webcams, but these are now operating once again. Apologies for any disappointment caused.

Update 10 September: It seems that the bird seen and heard on St Luke's is a local falconer's bird and NOT one of ours. NB.

As we head for the middle of August it is to be expected that the four young birds will begin to drift away from the cathedral and start to live their independent lives. Web cam watchers report the occasional view of one youngster on the nest platform plus, of course the adults (mainly the male) who hang about all year.
One interesting report has come from someone who lives near St Luke's church. On more than one occasion he's heard the calls of peregrines coming from the church tower.
St Luke's church
This very tall tower looks ideal for peregrines to perch on. It's not that far from the cathedral and the suspicion is that at least one of the juvenile birds has made a temporary base there.
The only other tall structures we know the peregrines use, apart from the cathedral and Jurys Inn, is the police aerial mast in Chester Green though we have had no reports from there this year.
Police aerial mast
Only very occasionally have we seen an adult peregrine (or indeed a juvenile) perch on St Mary's Church just to the north of the cathedral. This Roman Catholic building is not nearly as tall as the cathedral tower but seems to be frowned on by our birds.
If you live in or visit Derby you might care to check out St Luke's in particular. So far, our own visits haven't produced any sightings.....let us know if you do see one there.

Peregrines getting quite a bit of tv time at the moment. ITV featured them nesting on the coast of Brittany in the "Wild France with Ray Mears" programme at 20.00 hrs tonight - just towards end of programme. Showed them nesting on cliffs, lovely to see them in their natural habitat.

Interesting that there may be a siting of our peregrines on St.Luke's - perhaps it's one of our juveniles setting up home so it can still drop in on mum and dad occasionally! Possibly the one we still see occasionally on the scrape.

Fantastic news that we've reached our grand total - if only we could have Chris Packham stand up in Parliament and put the case to the 'men in suits' we might stand a chance of getting a Bill passed outlawing the persecution of the native moorland birds.

May well be 'drawing to a close ' but just been watching Peregrine on the scrape with quite a sizeable chunk of prey at far end then hopping up to near end to clean & dislodge feather stuck on beak ... shame I couldn't record but am in bed watching on Nexus!
Agree Heather that CP should be our wildlife ambassador presenting the case to MP's!!

And so it continues.....

Satellite tagged hen harrier named Elwood that fledged its nest in Aberdeenshire In July has disappeared. It last transmitted from Monadhliath Mountains an area managed for grouse shooting on 3 August.

Altogether 8 Golden Eagles have stopped transmitting 2011and July this year.

Looks like all the webcams are offline at the moment.

Thanks Helen for the heads up.
With some key people on leave this week we think we will not be able to resolve whatever the problems are until next week.
We do apologise.

For anyone who missed the Hen Harrier day held in Edale, Derbyshire earlier this month here's a link for one of the speakers, Tim Birch from Derbyshire Wildlife Trust.

Links for the other speakers can also be found on this page, all of which make for great viewing/listening. Very inspiring!

Good to see the local petition for 'no moor shooting' has also now reached over one thousand signatures - https://you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/no-moor-management-for-grouse-shooting-on-two-national-trust-estates-in-derbyshire

Peregrine on scrape at moment. Are any of our juveniles still around?

Posted a while ago about people seeing an eagle around Chatsworth and surrounding areas and whilst in car park in Bakewell yesterday it was wonderful to see a large bird gliding on the thermals in the sunshine. However, I think it's more likely to be a buzzard having looked up the difference between these two birds. The buzzard is also more prevalent over the Derbyshire area.

An adult peregrine sitting on the platform this afternoon. It looks as if it might be the female bird. I haven't seen any of the juveniles on the cameras for a while now but it's possible they might still be around.

Spring has sprung in Australia.
The Peregrine Falcons at the Charles Sturt University in Orange-NSW, Australia have their first egg :-)

A fabulous striped feather in the corner of the nest platform today. It looks like it could be a moulted tail feather from one of the peregrines. It seems fairly large.

Here is a link to a vid by Arjen covering the laying of the first egg at CSU ... https://youtu.be/-23YU18YsO0

Talking of vid links, I was fortunate enough this evening to see an adult Peregrine eating on the scrape & having a good long rest afterwards ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAkW6sZGIzs
Bank Holiday bonus methinks & I think I saw your feather Heather (ooooh, a poet!) although it doesn't show up so well on this vid!

Both of the adult peregrines were perched on the nearby hotel lettering this morning, but there was no sign of any of the juveniles. A while later as I walked back around lunchtime I saw the male bird fly towards the cathedral tower, although I quickly lost sight of where he landed. After a bit of searching I finally spotted him tucked inside an alcove above the louvres on the side of the tower facing the hotel, sheltering from the heavy rain. Whilst I have seen him sitting in a similar position on the East face of the tower above the platform, I have never seen him perched like that on the north (?) side before. I guess it must depend on which is the most sheltered spot!
