And then there were three and an Update

Update Friday pm: still no fourth chick but there's time yet for the last egg to hatch so let's not give up hope just yet!
Thanks to everyone who has commented and sent screen prints or put them on the flickr site. We can't put them all on the blog but they are great to see - so many thanks!

Our Watch Point season approaches so Emma Wood, who's organising them this summer, will be putting the details on this blog in a week or so's time. The first Watch Point is on Saturday 28th May with more on the following Wednesdays and Saturdays into early July. Hope some of you can get along to one or more.

On a bright sunny morning in Derby, a female peregrine falcon tends her new charges, sheltering them from the heat of the sun shining down on them. Her partner comes in, and for a brief moment three white balls of fluff are exposed for us to see, then just as quickly hidden away from view as he takes over their care..

It seems that our third chick may have hatched at first light this morning, around 6am.

Screen capture s- 09:22am 5th May

Here are some lovely videos which Wendy Bartter captured at home earlier this week, including a changeover and first feed of the newly-hatched eggs:

(Re-posting this comment on the new blog)The two older chicks just had a good feed. (10:00am)The smallest chick missed out this time but I'm sure it will catch up on the next feed. The adult birds are usually very adept at making sure each chick gets it's fair share.

Thanks Helen.
Tiercel just arrived with food, Falcon rushed over, but kept it in top corner, would not give to chicks, she then flew off with it, leaving the Egg ( which looks as though it has a pip).
She returned empty handed, then teircel landed empty handed, came over to take on the Eggs and the Falcon flew off. Phew!!!
Looking very warm.Pics on the group in a mo..

Arr so glad to hear of new arrival and that the chicks have been fed. Here's hoping for next egg to hatch soon.

Derek said...

Feeding time at 13-10 including a little for the new born. Falcon flew off with meaty carcase at 13-18 tiercel followed

Vicky said...

The chicks are feeding again. Still one egg to hatch. Probably today.

Kate said...

Thank you Derek.

Vicky just captured that feed pic on derby flkr group.

Vicky said...

Hi Kate, I don't capture any pictures for flkr. I just tell when I see them feed or hatching. I love seeing all the pictures tho.

Kate said...

Hi Vicky
Your postings are always appreciated. and I know Wendy ( bless her) likes the times , as then it is a bit easier for her than wading through hours of static shots.

I only try to capture events similar to you, and know that the nicks check Derby flkr group.

Will tonight see the fourth, or is it out ? CHOL:):)

Happened to catch the 1.10pm feed! Fantastic! I was showing it live to my English class and they were enthralled! Saw the tierce arrive with the prey and she fed the chicks. He flew off 'because of the noise' someone said! :-) We have been talking about the peregrines and including them in our lessons since March. They can't wait for the Peregrine Watches on the green when we hope to come over and have a look through the telescopes. :-) Thanks to everyone who makes this possible! Brill.

Jessica said...

Just re-read my comment. yes, I now it's the tierce and yes, it was the falcon who fed the chicks. Tooooo excited! :-D

Been out all day enjoying this lovely sunshine so have missed all the action. So pleased that finally the chicks are being fed, was worrying (unnecessarily) that the first hatchling wasn't getting the necessary moisture from a feed especially in the hot weather.

Was also going to ask if any schools were viewing this year and pleased to hear from Jessica that her English class are watching, it's such a good way to inform youngsters about our wildlife and how precious it is. Sadly today along a stretch of road I saw two pheasants a male and female run over, the female purposely killed and it left me wondering if she was caring for young as our falcon is.

Thanks Wendy for all your hard work with the videos, now have time to catch up and fingers crossed that we won't have a 'spare' egg like last year.

Wendy Bartter said...

Sad about those Pheasants Heather ... I missed the 1.00ish feed due to cam dropout (forgot to set the vital auto refresh needed with #4) but here is the later one with all its comings & goings ... Parents getting very busy, busy with the three chicks demands & still a fourth to come, should we be so lucky!

Mr P just flew in and there was an immediate change over. Still just 3 chicks.

Vicky said...

Mom' back at 5:34 no prey with her. Mr P left right away.

Karen B said...

Hi.. yes due to work , I missed alot of the action yesterday watched for a while yesterday evening but no feeding etc. However a big thankyou to Wendy as I could catch up with some of footage! Also watched Woking vid sad but that's nature. Saw some nice views of Sheffield's chicks yesterday don't they grow quick!

Jessica said...

7.35am. Mr P just dropped off breakfast for mum and 3 chicks. They are all feeding well. 4th egg still not hatched so what are its chances?

Kate said...

Thanks Jessica
I have put capture on Fllkr

Maybe lucky with hatch today.

Anonymous said...

Hi Jessica there is still time for the last egg to hatch. Peregrines have a primary and secondary incubation. She keeps the eggs warm until all are laid and then starts a full incubation. Mrs P usually starts a full incubation following the third egg so we often have one egg a day or two later.
Chicks just fed.

I remember the little guy - last born from last year. His sisters were so much bigger than he but he fledged last and altho a bit of a mama's boy he flew strong. The girls were quite aggressive. I just hope after 2 years of 3 we finally have 4. She's pecking at the gravel right now.

Vicky said...

I forgot, Mrs P is still rocking the last egg.

Unknown said...

Changeover at 11.30am. Mrs P out, Mr P in and saying Hello to his 3 babies.
One chick not as lively as other 2.
Seems to be a big bump on 4th egg.

Unknown said...

Food, glorious food!
Making sure smallest one gets some, but he/she doesnt seem all that bothered about eating.

Unknown said...

All very active today. Mrs P flew off with food. One baby has wandered away from the others.
Parent came back after a few minutes and covered the two chicks and was calling to the
stray baby to come back, and he/she did!!

Unknown said...

Amazing footage 1145 one chick was near the edge. Dad came in covered the 2 chicks. The stray appeared to try and get back. Mum arrived quickly took charge all three now back together.Well done mum.

Some really interesting behaviour from one of the chicks this morning. During a feed (11:42)one chick was so keen to get fed that it managed to shuffle away from the others nearer to the parent bird. After providing it with a few morsels of food the female then moved across to the other two chicks, before flying off to cache the remaining prey. The forward chick was left quite a long way from the others, well beyond the reach of the male bird who came back briefly to brood the other two chicks. Fortunately soon after the female returned the chick eventually managed to haul itself back to the others. Difficult to see if it was helped by the adult bird, although I didn't think it was, other than receiving a bit of (verbal) encouragement. I've never seen such a young chick move that far at this stage. A few pictures on Flickr (in reverse order).

I shall have a look at recordings Helen & hope I have it! Did actually see this happen at Woking a couple of days ago when inexperienced parent was eating a bit far from really hungry chicks & not bothering to feed them ... suddenly one lunged forward & got noticed & fed! Amazing!

14.45 afternoon snack. Prey taken to top right of other side.Maybe for later.

Mr P just brought some food, and Mrs P promptly flew away with it!!

Nick Brown (DWT) said...

Hi: someone way back asked if we knew anything of last year's brood apart from the female 030 who has spent the winter at Rutland Water. The answer is sorry, we don't....and we've not heard any more about 030 either.....

Why is there always a dustbin icon at the end of my comments? No-one else gets them!

Helen said...

Hi Lesley, everyone gets a dustbin icon at the bottom of their own comments. However you can only see the dustbin against the comments that you have personally made. So when I view the list of comments I have them below the comments that I've added myself but I can't see them against yours or anybody else's comments. This means that you have the option of deleting anything that you have added yourself but you can't delete other people's comments (unless you are a blog administrator). I hope that makes sense.

Unknown said...

Thank you, Helen. That makes perfect sense, and I should have realised that!

Unknown said...

Mum flew in with prey & everyone's hungry. Dad's on the ledge at the other side. I can't see the last egg clearly.

Karen B said...

Hi all, not been able to watch much of the cam action today, so thankyou for all comments so I can keep up to date. Thanks to Nick Brown re- question about last years brood.
Still yet to see feed but sure I will catch up over weekend.

Phoebe, you have put a thanks on my flkr hatch emerge, saying thanks Helen , You might want to put it on Helens. CHOL:):)

This morning chicks chirping on a very windy damp misty morning.

Heather said...

Certainly a blustery morning but weather forecast seems to be for some hot temperatures at least for the next few days. Saw changeover in middle of night and great to see 4 chicks and not an egg in sight! Our pair have done us proud this year even if it does mean more mouths to feed. Once again thanks Wendy for videos.

Was astonished to see clips of the chick that went a.w.o.l. from its siblings but managed to return at feeding time as it was quite a distance. Last year we had the 'feisty females' and it looks as if we've got another character this year!

Morning Heather
Feeding at mo..

Heather said...

Morning Kate

Yes just seen it, the little one underneath didn't seem to get much, if any, despite a couple of attempts at begging for food. Perhaps it'll have better luck next time.

Karen B said...

Morning all, just seen my first live feed. Was just about to comment about no. 4 did'nt really see chick under pile of white fluff. Only saw one fed but think it was at end of feeding time when i logged on. Must be difficult when your the smallest-

Hi Karen, Saw feed earlier this morning which might have been the same one you mention. Prey was brought to far end of scrape and expertly plucked. Little one was underneath the other three and I didn't think it would stand a chance of getting any food, but fought its way to the front and had a good feed enough for its size.

Wendy - it was facing the wrong way this morning too, perhaps it needs to adjust its radar!

Ann F said...

Hi just watched a feed and not sure if the little one got fed -did anyone see it get anything?

Heather said...

Sorry Karen getting my days mixed up, thought your comment regarding feeding at 8.04 was the 9th and just realised you made it on the 7th - perhaps I've been out in the sun too long!

Awesome post! The story of the near-extinction of these majestic birds throughout the lower 48 states is just one example of why sustainable farming practices are so important. Thanks!
