Easter Egg and now a second one

Latest news 8pm Wednesday 30th: we have a second egg, first reported by the blog comments received (for which many thanks). It was laid about 7pm today. This screengrab photo taken by Kate clearly shows the second egg! (Thanks Kate):

And then there were two.......screenshot by Kate

The video below was captured by Wendy Bartter to whom many thanks:

Here's the original text written on Monday after the first egg was laid:
It's always nice to receive an egg at Easter-time. After leading us a merry dance, our falcon finally laid her first egg today, just around 1pm.
Over the last few days she had repeatedly visited the nest platform, spent a while scraping in the gravel, then standing over it for a while longer. This lunchtime however she looked distinctly like she was about to lay, and after a while of searching through the camera recordings we could confirm she had definitely laid between 12:58 and 13:05, though there was little sign of the egg itself.
Camera 2 gave the best view a little while later, and the second photo below was captured as a screenshot and uploaded to Flickr by HelenSara729. We'll upload a second video later today.

Because of he cold, damp weather, we should expect her to spend some time on the eggs, although in fairer weather it is not unusual to see the egg or eggs apparently abandoned for some considerable time. Incubation proper does not  occur until the penultimate egg has been laid - and this delay in development ensures that all the eggs hatch out around the same time.

Hello Tracey
Hope you will continue to enjoy seeing more activity.

Mum left the Egg to cool or go for a comfort break at 17.09 44 ( Cam clock)
Lonesome Egg Pics on flkr as usual, but Mum soon returned.

Great News! I just knew the first egg would be laid this afternoon whilst I was out. But, I have a screenshot taken just before I left at 13:02 which may be the actual laying. Will post on flickr.

Glad to hear the first egg has been laid. I wonder if there will be another aggressive group like last year? By the way I am from Abbotsford BC. I used the name Abby-lynn last year as I used that name for something else. Thought it was time to use my real name. This is the 3rd year for me. While you are all sleeping I keep an eye on them. Hi to Phoebe. I remember you from last year. Mom is sitting on the edge of the scrape and the lone egg looks good.

Hi Vicky

Isn't it typical my Wi-fi has been down for the last few days and has just been reinstated. Heard on radio Derby that the first egg has been laid and was visible as peregrines off scrape. Is it my imagination or does the egg look a bit battered with some white patches on it? Just heard another item on radio explaining to presenter why the egg is left unattended sometimes until the full clutch is laid.

Vicky - will probably be joining you in the early hours here in the UK as I'm one of those insomniacs who really appreciate watching what they get up to during the night!

Vicky said...

Hi all, You are all up and moving and I am ready for bed. Heather it will be nice to chat with another night owl Mom is just sitting behind the egg. I think the "battered" egg is just the colouring of the egg. At least I hope so. Nite all and will be checking in the early morning of my tomorrow.

How lovely that the first egg of 2016 has arrived. Looking forwarding to seeing more arrive.

Great to see that the same pair are still reigning at Derby Cathedral and the first egg has appeared. Greetings to everyone here and on the project.

Planning a holiday?
Thinking of taking a few hours away from your computer?
Fancy a day out sometime this spring in a place without WiFi?
Hate the frustration of missing something important?

. . . Then you need our handy 'FAQ' table!

This nifty little table plots all the past life-cycle events of our perky peregrines.
At a glance you'll see precisely when it's safe to turn your head away from your PC.
Don't want to miss that magic hatching moment? Then check out past peregrine performance and plan for a frustration free future.

You'll find our helpful FAQ Tab at the top of this blog.
Check it out and make your future more 'falcon-friendly'.

(OK, you'll probably still miss something, but don't say we didn't try to help).

Have posted two pics of just the egg, showing what is hopefully just splodge..

Maybe Nick can do a better close up sometime CHOL:):) as if he does not have enough to do, but we really appreciate all the Teams efforts in bringing us such a wonder Nest to watch for our armchairs. Thank you all again.

Hi Vicky I remember you posting. Glad you're back. Will be good to see how this little family go on.

Heather said...

Mrs P ? fast asleep on edge of scrape and egg still seems to have some 'splodge' on it. I thought it would have washed off by now as it sounds from the audio cam 4 that it's raining. But I'm an eternal optimist and am sure everything is fine.

"Night Owl" signing off now - over to you Vicky for the night shift!

Vicky said...

Everything has been very quiet. mom is sleeping and I haven't seen dad for quite awhile. I'll check in later.

Unknown said...

Has it always been the same pair over all the years?

Heather said...

Hi Lesley, Yes the two arrived in 2006 but couldn't find anywhere to nest so the platform was built and they successfully bred the following year and have been together ever since (he hasn't traded her in for a younger model yet!). However I believe if he/she did desert the area then it's likely another peregrine would take over.

Nick's FAQ's are extremely helpful with some of our general questions, and the chart showing the dates of first egg laying, numbers hatched etc particularly useful.

Vicky said...

Time for you all to take over. It was very quiet every time I checked. She stands up, turns a wee bit and lays back down. I'll miss the next 7 hours but will read the posts. Nite from Canada. it is 12:58 am.

The comments facility doesn't allow photos but we are more than keen to see what you have and post images on the blog itself.
Thanks to everyone who has commented and helped us keep up to date!

Thanks again to the whole team who continue to work behind the scenes on this project. I know that it has taken over your lives!

Has anyone seen dad recently? I'm getting rather worried as I haven't seen him for a couple of days

Unknown said...

Just seen the male arrive on far ledge (Cam 1 view), approx. 16.17. They bowed to each other, then female flew off.

Helen said...

Hi Louise the male bird often sits above the nest platform on the tower inside a small alcove which is out of view of the cameras. Or higher up on the grotesques and pinnacles of the tower. He also spends time on the nearby hotel building so he's probably not that far away. Maybe just keeping a low profile. I expect he is likely to be finding food for the female bird as well as himself now. The female seems very settled at the moment.

Vicky said...

it is 5 minutes of 12 your time and all is quiet. Haven't seen dad around but you say Helen he is upstairs watching over his precious family.

Heather said...

Hi Vicky, Night Owl here, just checked scrape and no-one at home except two lonely eggs. Possibly Ms P has gone off for a quick snack or just to stretch her wings. I haven't seen Mr P either as previously mentioned by Louise but as Helen said he's probably around in one of the places she mentioned. Have seen Mrs P often looking upwards during the day so think she's looking at him.

Off to bed now, late night again 2a.m. here.

Vicky said...

5:22 am and she did a little preening and now has tucked her head back over her shoulder and is trying to sleep.

Unknown said...

Hi Helen thankyou for your reply. Ive still not managed to see Mr.P but hopefully he is just out of camera shot .

louise said...

I think ive finally seen dad !! Mum flew off around 12.20 within a couple of minutes the eggs were being sat on again. I'm just waiting for her return to confirm this are ok

Unknown said...

Yes, Louise, confirmed. Both there at 5 past 2 this afternoon.

Phoebe said...

Nice to see the tiercel on the eggs, he always like to do his bit.

Both adults present 16.20.

Still only two eggs, 22:55

Vicky said...

5 minutes of 11 and mom just hopped up onto the ledge. 2 sweet little eggs looking very good.

Vicky said...

11:12 mom left and one of the adults just came back at 11:18. I think it is Mr P because of the way he approached the eggs. Kind of leery about whether or not he should. He did some echupping on the edge of the scrape first. I love it when Mrs P comes back and makes him get off the eggs. She approaches very sternly and if he doesn't get up she nudges him. I'm sure he wants his turn.

Phoebe said...

Hi Vicky, I think you will witness the third egg tonight! She was very fidgety earlier on. Thanks for keeping us updating while we are sleeping.

Vicky said...

I won't get much chance tonight after 3 am your time as I am going to a 49th birthday party tonight but taking my iPad to check things out after the party at my sisters. Have a good sleep Phoebe. I hope I see the 3rd egg tonight. I hope she has 4 baby to look after this year and hope none are as aggressive as last year. Just the baby wasn't aggressive last year. I kept thinking will he ever get enough to eat and he did.

Carole Turner said...

Just seen a changeover - still only two eggs. Really hope Year 5 Planets can access the webcams at home over the next two weeks.... with around 54 hours between Eggs 1 and 2, they have calculated that egg 3 should arrive round 01.00 .... let's see how accurate they are! don't forget to predict the arrival of Egg 4!!

Phoebe said...

Hope you have a great time at the party! :-) I've been a bit on and off so far. Glad you enjoy watching these amazing birds and hope they have a good season.

Hi to Wendy Bartter and thank you for the videos you take. I don't know how you get them but well done!

The tiercel has been ousted now and the falcon is back on the eggs.
I can see the tiercel flying around he looks white in the night vision.

Vicky said...

I just think it is so funny when she comes back sometimes and lands on the other side then stalks over to him and he just gives up. Yet he looks like he enjoys sitting on the eggs. But to her its like - they are mine!

Vicky said...

1:46 She is sleeping peacefully.
