Our first chick hatches

Half an eggshell, and chick heard calling at 9am
. But not yet seen!
Our first egg hatched out this morning. By 9 am eggshell was clearly visible on Stream 3 - see screen grab.

Reports on Facebook and comments on the blog (thanks to Christine, Nikki, Luciana and Chris M) the first of our four eggs has hatched (at just before 8am this morning - Friday 10th).

We asked for screen grabs, and here are just a few you sent in. We welcome images posted to our Flickr, or emailed to us at  peregrines@derbyshirewt.co.uk. (Please save as jpegs -not .bmp files - and keep them 1Mb if you can.
BBC Radio Derby were first to get the news and carried a live interview about it on Ian Skye's programme at 09.05 today, with a further interview with the project team around 5pm this afternoon.

What Schools have said to us today:

WE NOW NO THAT THE EGG HAS HACHDE WE CARNT WAIT TO SEE THEM WE LIKE THE CULU OF THE EGGS.   (William and Noah,. Holmesdale Infants)

Green Class saw a chick haching. it was exsiting. we felt amaysed and rillee happy. it was rigling around. we saw some of the emty shell. the chikc was a bit small and white. it had flufy littel fethers. (Brigg Infants, Derbyshire)

We saw the chick being fed at dinner time just as we were getting ready to go and eat our dinner! We think the chick looks cute and can't wait for the other eggs to hatch. How egg-citing it is! (From the children in 2R at Gorsefield Primary in Radcliffe, Manchester)

Well seen Green Class - you're really ahead of nearly everyone! Indeed, I've still not seen the chick - just the egg shell....

I've posted a picture of the first feed to Flickr. It's not cleverly cropped at all, I was too excited!
Well done Green Class, you saw a magical moment!

This has made my day! Wonderful pics thanks to the new webcams & people's screen grabs. Nick & Nick, you must continue to be amazed by what putting up that nest platform all those years ago has brought about. Excellent work on the new exhibition too. Look forward to visiting Derby for real in the weeks to come.

Intriguing behaviour earlier. Female bird making a fair amount of noise, male bird, which had been mooching about the box, came right over to her and she then moved enough to let him see the chick which he stared intently at chick for several minutes.

Quite rare to see the parents so close together.

Went to have a look at display in Cathedral shop but camera was stuck on yesterday. Chap in shop said he would report it. Hope it's been sorted out.
Best wishes.

A big thank you to everyone who has sent in screen grabs and comments today....especially the children from Gorsefield, Holmesdale and Brigg Schools.
Nick M was at work (he is only employed a few hours a week on peregrines) and (volunteer) Nick B was out much of the day (and Ian L is on leave) so none of us were really up to speed - though NM managed to get a few shots that you sent in uploaded onto the blog at some point.
Seems like we should have no. two hatching soon!
Thanks again,

While watching yesterday evening [13th May] I saw a small rodent being brought to and fed to the brood. Is it expected that rodents feature in the 'usual' diet of nestling peregrines or are times tough for the male while hunting?

One of the adults was in our garden in Chaddesden at about 7pm looking rather bedraggled and miserable. We managed to get a blurred photo but it was through a rain covered conservatory door, so not brilliant. Greatly excited to have one visiting!
